  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Call upon the Name of the Lord and you shall be Saved.

Romans 10 and Acts 2 are both citing the same passage in Joel, and it is special pleading to claim that its usage in Joel is something different from all the other instances of its use throughout the rest of the Old Testament.

Call upon the Name of the Lord and you shall be Saved.

That phrase is used throughout the Old Testament, and in almost every instance it is in the context of an altar and an offering (which is the Scriptural paradigm of worship). So, it is not referring generically to "calling out to God," but rather refers to approaching God through an act of...

I don't really understand the book of Revelation

People tend to begin approaching the book of Revelation the wrong way from the get-go, having assumptions that they probably don't even know are assumptions. The word that we translate as "revelation" in Revelation 1:1 is the Greek word "Ἀποκάλυψις," and its significance goes beyond the mere...

LXX vs MT time in Egypt

We can roughly date the Exodus based on other portions of the Old Testament. One in particular is 1 Kings 6, where it says that the construction of the Temple began in the 480th year after Israel left Egypt. That would put the Exodus in roughly the mid 15th century B.C. The 430 vs. 215 years...

LXX vs MT time in Egypt

I absolutely agree that Israel was in Egypt 215 years, for the same reasons you cited. What this also means is that the Israelites weren't slaves for all that long, relatively speaking, and certainly not for 400 years. Joseph's brothers and father entered Egypt when Joseph was around 40...

An Un-asked For Street Debate In Greece

As for her fast talking, to give her the benefit of the doubt, she may just be really intelligent, getting her words out as quickly as she processes them in her mind. Very intelligent people can also be very wrong about things.

    What do these verses mean?

For one, that is a very biased translation, allowing specific ideas unique to the Protestant Reformation to color the text and its meaning. Those same verses from the EOB New Testament: "18And so, as through one sin all men were condemned; likewise through one act of righteousness all men were...

What are most Christians doing to prep?

We have probably a couple months worth of food preserved and set aside. We have a freeze dryer and a pressure canner with food and meals put aside from them, and we also have a stock of canned meat (such as SPAM, sardines, tuna, etc), peanut butter, rice, beans, etc. We have multiple 5-gal...

WWJD Did Jesus Pray to Mary?

There is no reason that God would ask a created being for anything. Except as a child, in which case He prayed to Mary throughout His childhood.

'Will Heaven be boring?' John Piper responds to fears about eternity

If someone is afraid eternity in heaven may be boring, attend the Divine Liturgy to practice for it.

Which would you prefer to see in your translation, "Yahweh" or "Jehovah"?

When the Greek-speaking Jews translated the Scriptures into Greek in the few centuries leading up to Christ, they used "Kyrios" to translate YHWH/JHVH. That pattern continued in the New Testament. As that is the precedent set by the pre-Christian Jews and by the Apostles, then I am perfectly...

    what is worship?

If the essence of the question is "What is that which must be rendered unto God, and only unto God, and if rendered to anyone or anything else is idolatry?" then the answer is - other than the acknowledgement that He is God - incense and the Eucharist.

If no Orthodox parish - Catholic or Lutheran?

My advice is to contact the closest priest and to work to find a way.

    Romans 4, water baptism?

Paul is not saying that he has no interest in people being baptized. Rather, he is saying that, with limited exceptions, he is not the one sent to do the baptizing. Paul is "sowing seeds", so to speak, doing the initial evangelization. Others after him will be the ones to baptize.

What is the “one baptism” mentioned in Ephesians 4:5? (I have an answer, but I would like input).

It is not "one kind of baptism", as in water but not spirit, or spirit but not water. Rather, one baptism for all people, as opposed to a baptism for the Jews and a baptism for the Gentiles. The emphasis is on Jews and Gentiles being fellow heirs of the promises made to Abraham, and that there...
