  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They're lying. Got it.

Considering some of the violent people who support this president, you're probably right.
Trump supporters sending death threats to people and their family because Trump truth social-ed attacked them is standard operating procedure.
In this case, one act is saying they got threats. Everyone else who spoke says they got hoodwinked.

Maybe if you quoted what statement you're referring to it could be evaluated.
Sure.

"The Commodores will not be performing at the Great American State Fair," the group posted on their social media accounts. "Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. We support the betterment of all Americans."

Singer McBride said in a statement on X that she was "presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading".

Then there's Bret Michaels' statement:

Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of. Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable.
Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance.
This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That’s one of the freedoms our veterans fought for and something I’ve always respected. But as a father, friend and bandmate, I have to take threats and safety concerns seriously.

There's a common thread of the artists being misled about the nature of this event when they were first asked to perform. That's not at all surprising given this administration's tenuous relationship with the truth.
Trump supporters are threatening those who agree to perform for Trump for agreeing to perform for Trump, sure.
You seem to believe their own fans are threatening them. I seriously doubt Bret Michaels has a huge uber lefty liberal fanbase.

Do you just assume everyone on the left is duplicitous, lying and evil?

People on the left threatened Michaels which confirms what I said.
Do you just assume everyone on the left is duplicitous, lying and evil?
No I was expressing doubt that Trump supporters are threatening those who agree to perform for Trump for agreeing to perform for Trump.

How do you know they're on th left? You assume so.

Again I ask, do you just naturally assume everyone on the left is duplicitous, lying and evil?

Michaels stated that he pulled out of the event because he was misled about its nonpartisan nature. Everyone knows nothing is nonpartisan when it comes to Trump. He then got threats on X after announcing he wasn't going to join and that seems to have settled the matter for him.

Have you been on X lately? It's a right wing cesspool.
No I was expressing doubt that Trump supporters are threatening those who agree to perform for Trump for agreeing to perform for Trump.
I didn't say they were threatening him. I said, "Considering some of the violent people who support this president, you're probably right."

We can just look at the "Stop the Steal" rally or the "Unite the Right" rally from 2017 to see why some artists might want to avoid joining in any of these divisive hatefests sponsored by this hateful, divisive president.

No I actually looked into it. You're the one doing the assuming.

I already said no. What part of no don't you understand?

Apparently you missed the part in your own post about the threats.
Have you been on X lately? It's a right wing cesspool.
No. Did you catch that? I said "no" to that question. Perhaps the problem you're encountering is that it isn't a left wing cesspool any longer.
I didn't say they were threatening him. I said, "Considering some of the violent people who support this president, you're probably right."
About what? Or were doing one of those inane routines where what someone says is twisted in reverse? That's like elementary school level debating.

“Afternoon delight” sounds like something Don Sr would’ve mentioned in his bday card for Epstein.
“After School Special” would make an appearance, too, one suspects.

Who are the left wing liberals that threatened him then? No assumptions, please.
They probably back out because they're afraid of certain people on the left going crazy on them. Probably as soon as their name comes up, the threats start rolling in.
^This is an assumption on your part.
About what? Or were doing one of those inane routines where what someone says is twisted in reverse? That's like elementary school level debating.
Can you not follow the convesation?

You said he's playing it safe.

I said you're probably right given the violent nature of some of this president's supporters and now gave some examples of past right wing hate fests that have turned violent. I doubt this event will turn violent and certainly hope not, but I don't blame anyone for avoiding it altogether, just in case.
How about we stick to the current situation?
We're actually all off topic as this thread is about the company that got the bid for redoing the Reflecting Pool.

Look into it. I'm not writing an essay for you.
^This is an assumption on your part.
As indicated by the word "probably" that I used. Although I later found conformation. And really the point is the left is basically gloating over entertainers being afraid of what some on the left might do to them.
Can you not follow the convesation?
That depends on what games people are playing.
You said he's playing it safe.
I wasn't speaking about Michaels specifically. Across the board performers might be measuring their words to play it safe. It could be called being diplomatic.

In this case which is what's being talked about, it's unlikely Trump supporters are threatening those agreeing to perform for Trump's shindig.

I said current situation, rather than throwing in the "what about" kitchen sink. It's off topic enough as it is.

He got threats. Where did you see they were from the left?

They all put out statements detailing exactly why they aren't performing anymore. Only Michaels mentioned any threats and it's not clear if that was before or after he decided to back out of the event.

Several have said they were misled about the nature of event itself by the organizers. You don't seem to believe them to be sincere, for some reason and assume they're just getting threats from the left to force them to drop out. If you look at some of the comments from Trump supporters on Michaels' socials, it's not a stretch they're the ones more upset that he pulled out of this than anyone on the left was about him performing. I was genuinely surprised by the stance he took, tbh.

We on the left have much more relevant artists to care about than Bret Michaels.
In this case which is what's being talked about, it's unlikely Trump supporters are threatening those agreeing to perform for Trump's shindig.
I didn't say they were threatening him. I said knowing how violent some Trump supports have been in the past, playing it safe is just avoiding anything related to him in the first place.

Maybe we're all overthinking this. Bret probably took a look at some of his old lyrics and had a change of heart.

Well, I see him on the TV
He's preachin' 'bout the promised land
He tells me, "Believe in Jesus"
And steals the money from my hand
Some say he was a good man
But, Lord, I think he sinned, too
I drive by the homeless sleeping on a cold dark street
Like bodies in an unbound grave
Underneath the broken old neon sign
That used to read "Jesus saves"
A mile away live the rich folk
And I see how they're living it up
While the poor, they eat from hand to mouth
The rich drink from a golden cup

Don't matter.
The worst rated president in history just called them all a bunch of "third rate musicians".
Lacking those third rate musicians, Trump instead is turning the 250 year celebration into a straight up campaign rally; proving those withdrawing musicians right.

Your move Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida. The man just called you third rate musicians.

...and btw, for those military attending the Freedom 250 UFC fight night. They have to find their own way, and meet a specific "waist-height-ratio.
And by no means any members of the military who have lost limbs in action. HERE

The Defense Department is currently seeking junior enlisted personnel and junior officers, the lowest paid members on the military’s totem poll, according to internal memos reviewed by The Washington Post Friday. Yet they’ll also be required to pay their own way, should they be admitted—neither the Pentagon nor UFC reportedly intends to pay for the soldiers’ arrangements or accommodations.

Personnel will also be required to meet height and weight requirements before they’re allowed to fill the stands, and will be required to attend in their short-sleeve dress uniforms.

One memo that made its way through the Air Force stipulated that personnel “MUST MEET CURRENT WAIST-HEIGHT RATIO and current physical fitness standard” in order to make the cut for Trump’s audience.

Lol as if anyone believes it wasn’t going to be a pro Trump thing from the very beginning.

I love it. The artists they picked and invited to their event are suddenly all “third rate” now that they’ve decided to not be a part of this partisan hatefest.

Makes sense. You wouldn’t want a bunch of injured suckers and losers to mess with the optics of Trump’s America’s big day.

I don't think you can generalize from anecdotes. Or one anecdote in your case. But you could well be right re washed up legacy artists who aren't really creating.
In other words, don't trust my lying eyes? Sorry; been there and seen that, and for writing have done that. Self-censorship is a very real thing, for both good reasons and bad, and there's a very real bias in the arts and it sure ain't toward conservatives. If you think that not agreeing with what is accepted by those who make the decision to book an act or to publish fiction will result in the loss of a gig or a sale, the temptation to either keep your head down or to parrot what you think they want to hear is a strong one.

I know one author who had a Christian character as a protagonist in a work that wasn't in the Christian fiction genre. He was immediately called a Fundamentalist by some, which was a riot considering some other things he wrote and that the book didn't have a Christian theme at all. Had he not had several well received books under his belt, I doubt he could have gotten it published.

Note that if you're a big enough name, you can get away with more things. Hence the following well-worn joke:

"But Tom Clancy did that."
"And when you sell as many books as he, you can, too."

The extreme likelihood of this event being a partisan rally in disguise undermines your whole point. Who of good conscience would want to risk being associated with this morally abysmal figure when he inevitably makes the whole thing about himself and the "radical left democrats" etc? Unless you're full rah rah maga yourself, you'd run away from this thing as fast as possible lest you get completely used.

You've never heard Afternoon Delight? Truly, you are most blessed.
Of course I’ve heard of it. That’s how I knew it was the next line of the song.

I grew up listening to oldies when they were actually oldies, not grunge.

Trump supporters are threatening those who agree to perform for Trump for agreeing to perform for Trump, sure.

Trump supporters go after people who criticize Trump all the time.

We all knew the complaints about “cancel culture” were disingenuous, but wow does your side not even try to hide it anymore.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I really mean that. Just reading that had the song going through my head again. Had to think of a truly cringe worthy song by the Carpenters to squelch it.
