  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump said the Patriot Games would take place in the fall, describing the competition as "an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes, one young man and one young woman from each state and territory."

The Patriot Games were not the only event Trump previewed on Thursday. He also announced plans for a state fair on the National Mall and “the largest fireworks display in the world," as well as a “National Garden of American Heroes” that will feature "statues of all-time greatest Americans,"

So, giving high school athletes a chance to shine on a big stage, a state fair, and a record breaking fireworks display...

What's the part people are supposed to be outraged about?

Lemme guess, the concern is that the garden of heroes is going to feature too many straight white guys?

Sounds to me like typical trumpish floating of ideas without any clear goal in mind. He probably thought this up before the interview and without consulting anyone. I expect this to be quietly dropped and never materialise.

Almost certainly this Garden Of Heroes will be another embarrassment to America.

Not a big deal in any way. Just kind of.... what do the kids call it these days..... cringe?

"What the kids call cringe" and "catering to what the young peoples' preference du jour" hasn't been exactly a fruitful political strategy.

It's just ended up saddling the DNC between a rock and a hard place with a bunch of manufactured wedge issues.

Isn't the inverse just as "cringy"? A bunch of 60-somethings trying to act like they're "hip to what the kids are into"... that Steve Buscemi meme with the skateboard and backwards hat comes to mind.

Im just looking for their word. Not talking about appalling or appealing to that cohort specifically. Those who cringe would likely be anyone who can still see straight, regardless of their generation. For instance, I would fully expect Rush Limbaugh to make a appearance. Ouch.

Nonsense! They’re going to be held in one of the multiple new freedom cities he promised in a speech two years ago that are totally behind built!

Is anyone outraged? I don't know and honestly doubt it.

If his "grand military parade" is anything to go by, this event should be just as forgettable.

Actually, in the looking at the list of some of the proposed names, I don't see anything terribly controversial yet. (although, I'm sure there were be some young people who will get bent out of shape over Scalia and Christopher Columbus being on the list -- however, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and FDR made the list, so maybe that'll cancel it out in their eyes?)

The names were the * were included with original executive order.

Seems like it includes a broad mix of people of all races, creeds, and backgrounds - from founders, to singers, to athletes, inventors, astronauts, former presidents, authors, artists, generals, etc...

I dont trust them to stick to that. It would be out of character for Trump to resist including donors, partisans, or of course, himself.

Well obviously it's going to be the Trump National Garden of Remembrance, and it will probably include a list of 'donors'.

I think a Politico article summed up pretty well why that "worst case scenario" you describe would be unlikely...

Sculptors who saw the design specifications for Trump's garden described it as unrealistic, and that "America doesn't have enough quality sculptors or museum-caliber foundries to make this happen on Trump's speedy timeline".

The report questioned who would apply for the $200,000 commission, noting the low opinion of Trump in the artistic community.

In a nutshell, given that we know the political leanings of the "artsy" community, it's already going to be difficult for them just to get enough sculptors who are willing to put their name on a "Trump project" in the first place, much less a project that would be as hyper-partisan as you describe.

You may be able to find some that would be willing to suck it up and make some non-controversial sculptures from the names on the aforementioned list. (especially if there's $200k involved) given that there are quite a few civil rights leaders and democrats that made the list.

However, nobody from the artsy crowd is going to touch it with a 10 foot pole if it were to become a blatant "right wing sculpture exhibit" (not to mention the money would be getting allocated from the National Endowment of the Humanities...you think they're going to sign-off on a Proud Boys garden?)

I suspect he's going to find it impossible to resist sticking his name in front of it.
