  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Liberal Christians, what is your position on abortion?

In my profile it says I am a republican but that's only because I'm a single-issue voter when it comes to abortion. I believe there is no greater issue. I can understand the problems a Christian may have with Republicans based on immigration (problems that I myself have with the Republicans), but is it really worth siding with abortion enablers over? At least immigrants were allowed to be born!

I think that the abortion question is a difficult balance between the rights of the embryo which (if all goes well) will develop into a healthy child, and the rights of the person who carries that embryo inside her body. It is further complicated by the many ways that pregnancy can go wrong.

Once viability has been reached, in late pregnancy, every effort should be made to save the child, delivering early if need be to save the child and also protect the mother's health. Earlier than that, I see it as varying shades of moral gray.

I don't see viability as a variable. Sure, the more viable the fetus is, the more tragic an abortion is, but viability is achieved years after birth.

This issue is no longer relevant. It has been proven now that abortion has seen a rise with maternal death rising along with it. Overturning Roe.Wade made things worse. The pro- life advocates chose the wrong solution. The freedom of choice actually saved lives.

Here is a short synopsis of the overall climate today. Using CDC data and its underlying findings.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade has resulted in a profound and immediate polarization of healthcare outcomes across the United States. While the national abortion rate has surprisingly increased due to a massive surge of patients traveling to and receiving care from states without restrictions, effectively compensating for the near-zero rates in ban states, the impact on maternal health is demonstrably negative in restricted areas. States that enacted severe abortion bans are now seeing their maternal mortality rates rise, a trend that contrasts sharply with the significant decline in deaths observed in states that protected access. This divergence strongly suggests that the stable, universal access to safe, legal care that the Roe framework provided was, in the long run, essential for managing public health and maintaining a protective floor of care, whereas the current system of state-by-state fragmentation has introduced barriers directly linked to worsening maternal safety in nearly half the country.

I am opposed to abortion for the majority of situations. I have never been in such a position but if I was, I would not willingly be party to abortion of a fetus I had fathered.

That said, I don't think 13-year-olds should be compelled to deliver their father's baby. I don't think rape victims should be compelled to deliver their rapist's baby. I don't think women should die if an abortion could save their lives. I think these are difficult decisions to be made by the persons involved and not by men in suits.
