Liberal Christians, what is your position on abortion?

In my profile it says I am a republican but that's only because I'm a single-issue voter when it comes to abortion. I believe there is no greater issue. I can understand the problems a Christian may have with Republicans based on immigration (problems that I myself have with the Republicans), but is it really worth siding with abortion enablers over? At least immigrants were allowed to be born!

I think that the abortion question is a difficult balance between the rights of the embryo which (if all goes well) will develop into a healthy child, and the rights of the person who carries that embryo inside her body. It is further complicated by the many ways that pregnancy can go wrong.

Once viability has been reached, in late pregnancy, every effort should be made to save the child, delivering early if need be to save the child and also protect the mother's health. Earlier than that, I see it as varying shades of moral gray.

I don't see viability as a variable. Sure, the more viable the fetus is, the more tragic an abortion is, but viability is achieved years after birth.
