  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They received a promise that the GOP would consider the subsidies. Apparently, they have.

The Democrats SWORE that the ONLY way to continue the subsidies was to hold the line with the government shutdown. Obviously, they were wrong.

No, they were asking the GOP to come to the table to discuss the matter, but Trump wasn't talking to them and Johnson put the CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE sign on the House chamber. The Democrats were saying, correctly, that the law as written didn't extend the subsidies.

The bottom line is, all the Democrats had to do was agree to the clean CR, which they ultimately did anyway, and then address this issue separately. Had they done that, there wouldn't have been a government shutdown.

Their proposal isn't a straight extension of subsidies. It will force people into junk plans

Do you have a source for this claim? The article linked a few posts earlier doesn't say that. It says:

The White House is preparing a health-policy framework that would extend Affordable Care Act insurance premium subsidies for two years, Politico reported on Monday, a move that could put President Donald Trump at odds with some of his fellow Republicans.
...
According to Politico, Trump's plan is also expected to add new eligibility limits.
...
The White House plan is expected to include a new income cap for receiving ACA tax credits and a requirement for minimum monthly premium payments, Politico reported.
One option under discussion would limit subsidies to individuals earning up to 700% of the federal poverty level, aligning with ideas floated by a bipartisan group of senators, Politico reported.

At the current poverty level for 2025, that means an individual earning $109,550 or more would not qualify for the subsidies. Likewise, a family of four earning $225,050 or more would not qualify.

Why do you say this will force people into "junk plans"?

White House delays announcement of new healthcare cost plan

President Donald Trump had been scheduled to unveil his plan Monday, but the announcement was postponed without a reason, a White House official told CNN.

According to three people granted anonymity, as reported by Politico, the White House health plan was expected to include a two-year extension of Obamacare subsidies with new limits on eligibility. But that now appears to be off, following pushback from congressional Republicans, according to MSNOW.

I guess they'll need to come up with something sooner.
