This is called observational language. People living during that age did not have the advance knowledge that we do now. Remember that God inspired scripture but did not dictate it. This means each book has the literary idiosyncrasies and observations of each author.

Here Joshua is describing what he sees from earth. God’s miracle would have involved stopping or slowing the rotation of the earth so that the area where the fight was happening would give Israel enough daylight to defeat their enemies. So this is not a matter of stopping the sun but a matter of stopping the earth’s rotation.

God’s miracle would have involved stopping or slowing the rotation of the earth so that the area where the fight was happening would give Israel enough daylight to defeat their enemies. So this is not a matter of stopping the sun but a matter of stopping the earth’s rotation.
