  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is very good news!

Rare earths are not actually that rare outside China. What is rare is developed commercial sources of them. The concerning thing here is that the Chinese understood this ten years ago while free market capitalism decided it was not worth pursuing until the numbers added up. So the obvious question is whether Chinese communism is superior to the current Western system of governance when it comes to strategic decision making?

Americans have been criticising Europeans for a similar lack of strategic awareness on matters of military and energy security and now have a told you so attitude as the EU scrambles to catch up with the modern world. But the rare earth monopoly that China currently enjoys could also have been anticipated in the same way.

So what are the new areas where America and its allies are blind to global trends but the Communists are already preparing. Do we have a plan or are we just going to let Wall Street bungle this one also as they did with Rare Earths?

Both economic systems have their pros and cons but share the important facets. Toffs at the top Plebs at the bottom and Grifters in between.

This has nothing to do with the political system.

Americans and Europeans are just overly confident and overly secure.

Some worrying, some insecurity isn't always bad and can even be good because we take additional steps to plan, to be cautious and be more calculating in our actions.

So perhaps it may have to do with religion because we're indoctrinated in Christianity to leave our worries to God. In other words, never worry, never feel insecure. Yet I don't think this even doctrinally correct in context because even Jesus worried!

Rare earth metals are not that rare but the isolation of them is difficult. It causes a lot of pollution. China was willing to take that on, as perhaps the most polluted and polluting country on the planet. Maybe we can do it better, now that prices are high, but maybe not.

A mine in the Alaskan Artic might well be immune from those kinds of complaints. That Rare Earths could also be mined in more populous states is not mentioned in the article.

Comfortable does not have to equal strategic blindness. This is a failure of the power and money elites that rule the Western world but it seems that no one within the system will hold them to account for this. I just hope it will not be foreign powers that do that to us.

It is clear that we are richer and freer living in the West. The stories of Communist persecution of Christians are growing more and more seriously daily. But poor strategic planning and its vulnerability to spies are major weaknesses despite the billions spent on intelligence agencies.

DING! Solar energy and other renewables.

The more solar it creates the less dependency on other things.

We weren't blind to the National security issue with China and their rare earths. We knew about this since 2010, on their first embargo. The media has done a good job distracting us from the real issues facing both left and right Americans. Our politicians didn't have the political will to make themselves look bad for the good of the country in 2010, and China is playing the same shenanigans today.

If we were to get into a hot war with Russia or China, we wouldn't be able to keep up with armament production and would be heavily reliant on the other NATO members.

Political will to do what's right. I think climate change had something to do with Obama not taking action.
