  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This move comes as President Trump looks for ways to boost affordability for Americans. The renewed focus follows the victory of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, which has heightened attention on housing and everyday living cost.

I lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck and the Schumer shutdown was a shot that had a ripple effect that economically hurt a lot of people. President Trump is right on top of the situation.

....a lot of people were living paycheck to paycheck when Trump imposed the tariffs that he is now rolling back.
A lot were living paycheck to paycheck when the Schumer shutdown hit the economy, causing transportation and delivery holdups and the withholding of pay and SNAP benefits. This is a tariff tweak by Trump in regard to food, the food banks were almost exhausted and had those eight Democrats not joined in a bipartisan effort much more damage would have been done.

This has nothing to do with the shutdown. Stay focused. This is Trump admitting tariffs are having a negative effect on the economy.

The truth is that tariffs have had a tremendously positive effect on the U.S. economy. As Trump stated long ago he would adjust the tariffs.
Unfortunately there are people who actively want to see Trump fail and are willing to let people economically suffer in order to achieve that goal. I think those people will promote another shutdown early next year.

His tariffs are random or politically motivated. They were not built on a sound economic plan. Tariff adjustments = Admitting failure.

Idk why you think this has anything to do with the shutdown. People have been saying these arbitrary tariffs are only going to raise prices and literally cannot bring back certain things to be produced within the US. This is just the administration tacitly admitting they messed up and trying to pass off their adjustments as part of the plan all along.

How? Give me an example.

As Trump stated long ago he would adjust the tariffs.
Why? I thought they were a bargaining chip to bring other countries in to negotiate better trade deals. Why is he now dialing them back?

Trump is fixing just a tiny portion of the mess he has made. The tariffs were as foolish as they were illegal. The court is going to smack him down so hard.

Trump continues to adjust the tariffs as he said he would from the start.

Tariffs have been a legal tool for many presidents.

Someone, somewhere in the administration realized the climate in the US is not suited for growing some things the American public wants (coffee, bananas, etc) in the quantity needed.

In these cases it was clear all the tariffs were doing is raising prices for American shoppers because we can't grow that stuff here. Also, its not like say expensive French wine where the consumers are in the minority. A ton of people buy coffee and bananas.

I generally support Trump. But, in this case its just fixing an issue he caused by placing a tariff on mass consumed goods we can't produce here.

Not the way Trump has used them this year. He is declaring illegal non-existent emergencies (trade deficits that have existed for decades, claiming powers not granted under the emergency statue (to issue tarrifs) and then applies them to countries that don't even meet his own criteria (e.g., trade surpluses with Brazil).

Or even... exist, in some cases.
You can't expect them to limit their tariffs to only existing countries. Exports from Narnia need high tariff rates.

By Trump's good grace we will even out our trade deficits with the penguin nation of the Heard and McDonald Islands!

Many Democrats just didn't understand how beneficial tariffs could be to our country. It will be nice for everyone to get $2000 to put back into the economy.

Then why the need to reverse them?
It will be nice for everyone to get $2000 to put back into the economy.
It would be nice if things just didn't cost so much. A one time $2000 bandiad isn't going to fix the problems driving up the cost of living for the average American but reducing these pointless tariffs will help.
