If someone wants to become a "real" pedophile hunter, one should join the police and aim to get into a unit that combats such crimes.

I wouldn't reccommend it, those people are often deeply emotionally scarred by the things they witness.

Anyone else is just, at best, a keyboard warrior or a vigilante with delusions of righteousness. At worst they are just looking for an excuse to accuse or beat someone up or they are doing this stuff to hide their own deviancy.

Personally, I hope that one day we'll get two independent predator patrols trying to "hunt" each other.

Being accused as a pedophile is such a great mark of shame in today's society that even a false public accusation has life-altering consequences, so I think that such an activity belongs into the hands of experts, both to protect the children and those who would be innocently accused.

Glad they got him. Hopefully he got to meet their Billy club a few times as well. Too bad the UK doesn't seem to be as concerned about this sort of thing happening by people coming from....uh.....other countries....

There have been reports of people in the neighbourhood of pedohunter targets getting death threats just because they were living near those people.

Also, plenty of false confessions have been obtained by the police.

And the video of the January encounter at his home, recorded and published by a group called the Colorado Ped Patrol, a citizen-led nonprofit that tries to expose pedophiles, remain online.

"Brush PD put his name and address on Facebook," Nicol said. "He received death threats. His house was vandalized. He's been vilified in his hometown. His family changed its name. Dentists have refused to treat him," as have doctors.

"They ruined someone's life, basically."

This makes me think of modern-day Salem witch trials. Sounds like the guy has a major payday coming up when he sues the pedo hunters for defamation. Should probably go after the doctors and dentists that refused treatment as well, assuming they refused him due to the vigilante allegations.

When in doubt, vilify.

When no longer in doubt, keep vilifying no matter what because if you stop thats like admitting you were wrong. And this is a bad thing to be wrong about.

In some ways the vigilante self-professed "pedophile hunters" present just as big of a public safety concern as actual pedophiles.

"Vigilante justice", while swifter and more satisfying to some than actual justice, is often prone to mistakes and rash decision making.

There have been plenty of stories about those guys thinking they got the right person (based on descriptions that aren't detailed enough to be "for sure" IDs to make sure they got the right guy), and then committing what's tantamount to a gang assault on the wrong person.

They've also publicly harassed the wrong people in stores and restaurants yelling "this guy was planning on having sex with <insert age here> girl", and then find out after the fact that smeared someone in public for no reason.


Then there's other stories where the so-called "hunters" have become the hunted.

I'll see if I can find the story....pretty sure I've linked it on here before.

But there was that one so-called "predator hunter" who "operated" in Ohio and Michigan, and was famous for uploading videos of him and his buddies cornering a person in a public place, and then slapping them on camera, and when the people would threaten to call police he'd say "that's fine, when the cops get here I'll take that charge, you take the pedophilia charge"

Well, one day they got the wrong person, that person didn't take kindly to being surrounded in a parking lot 4-to-1, being called a "pedo" and getting slapped, and decided to exercise a little vigilante justice of his own and shot the guy (I believe he ended up dying), and wounded one of his "henchmen".
