  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

MSNBC did the right thing here, this is a good sign. Conservatives have been urging people to pull back on the hatred and violent rhetoric.
“Bad thing” happens to person who said unpopular thing?

I think they are drawing Charley Kirk into accusations that are false. He was all about free speech, and exchange of ideas.
Yes. Here's an op-ed:

“‘What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have a reasonable disagreement where violence is not an option”: Charlie Kirk spoke, lived and died according to those words.
He welcomed the chance to argue — civilly — with random people whose opinions differed completely; exemplified the spirit of liberal (in the old-school sense of espousing liberty and generosity of spirit) give-and-take.

Of course that is what they are doing.

Yep... it stings when the boomerang changes directions and comes back the other way doesn't it?

To anyone who was okay with a person losing their job over a controversial position on covid, jokes, gay stuff, etc... who's now suffering "job loss" consequences due to them expressing controversial positions on this story, I have no sympathy for them.

They've had the opportunity to be "die hard free speech absolutists" for the last 5-10 years, and declined... they can't expect the faction that they vilified the whole time to come to their defense now.

And the "have their cake and eat it too" expectation with "oh, I thought you guys were about free speech" is hollow. The "I'll laugh at your standard and say it's stupid, until your standard would've benefitted me, then I expect you to uphold it otherwise I'll call you a hypocrite" isn't going to play either.

It is particularly ironic that people are getting fired for being insensitive towards the late beacon of free speech.

The guy who started the Professor Watchlist is not necessarily the brightest beacon in the lighthouse.

Responses to the site include the American Association of University Professors and The New York Times raising fears that it threatens academic freedoms by harassing and intimidating staff, conservative magazine National Review describing it as an "irritable gesture" of victimhood by conservatives, and concerns about the safety and welfare of staff following a trend of threatening behavior and communication, including rape and death threats, being sent to listed faculty.

I should’ve said “self proclaimed beacon of free speech “.

Private companies can do more or less as they like, but the government is constrained by the First Amendment as to what it can do to employees for their speech.

State employees fired over Charlie Kirk posts inundate courts

State government employees are taking to the courts after being fired over social media posts criticizing conservative activist Charlie Kirk upon his assassination.

More than a dozen employees, from a Tennessee high school science teacher to a landscape supervisor at Auburn University, have sued over allegations their punishments violate the First Amendment.

many of the other lawsuits remain in early stages. But one has already been resolved.

The University of South Dakota dropped its bid to terminate art professor Michael Hook for writing on Facebook, “I don’t give a flying ... about this Kirk person,” after a judge temporarily reinstated him.

“I hope the State now understands that the First Amendment prohibits it from punishing anyone for speech about public issues — no matter how much State or national leaders or others disagree with it,” Hook said in a statement.

Oh Yeah, a judge defends murder. Wow.

The judge was not deciding a murder case, but a case of wrongful termination for protected speech.
