  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So.....did your insurance premium go up?

It is Open Enrollment time so people are seeing what their premiums will be. My Medicare Advantage plan premium has significantly increased, but since I get what Arizona elected officials/ former elected officials on Medicare get, it is not bad.

But wow, for those who are not on Medicare, and have a family of three or more, the monthly cost is $1,848.00 per month! This is the amount for those in the Arizona schools systems, universities and colleges, work in the state prisons, and elected officials and I think the Department of Public Safety officers (like state police) will have to pay for medical insurance.

A single teacher, who may only make $50,000 a year, will have to pay at least $660/month for the 'economy' plan.

But hey, Trump is building a ballroom! It is his number one priority per Karoline Leavitt.

I haven't seen the Obamacare premiums yet which some family members will be using.

What is happening with your medical insurance?

I’m never not appalled at how in America health care is rationed by individual wealth.

Nothing to get in a twist over, that better cheaper thing that’s going to replace the ACA is due any two weeks from now.

That 'two weeks' thing never seems to happen.

I have healthcare through my employer. Our open enrollment hasn't started yet, but I'm worried. I posted this in the Shutdown thread regarding ACA rates:

Higher Obamacare Prices Become Public in a Dozen States

Consumers are facing greater costs for their 2026 A.C.A. health coverage as Congress continues to debate whether to extend subsidies that help people afford their premiums.

Based on the newly posted information, a family of four making $130,000 in Maine would face an increase of $16,100 in annual premiums next year because they would no longer qualify for more generous subsidies, said Gideon Lukens, a health policy researcher for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which supports extending the subsidies.

Older people will also see sharp increases, according to his calculations. In Kentucky, a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 per year could face an increase of $23,700 in annual premiums. In Nevada, a similar couple could pay an additional $18,100 in annual premiums, while in Minnesota, the cost might be $15,500 more and, in Maryland, an additional $13,700.

Lets talk insurance coverage. Maybe this will help.

The core, non-negotiable principle of the ACA is that insurance companies can no longer deny coverage or charge more money to anyone because of a pre-existing condition. This was the fundamental promise to end medical discrimination. However, this protection only works because the ACA also provides subsidies (financial help) to keep premiums affordable and implements market rules to get enough healthy people into the system. If you try to strip away the subsidies or other conditions, the cost of insuring the sick would skyrocket, effectively canceling out the pre-existing condition guarantee by making the insurance utterly unaffordable. For true security, the whole structure must remain intact.

Meanwhile a friend of mine is waiting to go for heart surgery. He's a regular guy with an ordinary job - so I don't know his exact income, but I'd guess he pays around $1,500 per year medicare levy.

Total cost for heart surgery, recovery for at least a week in hospital, plus therapy for 2-3 months afterwards = $0, though he'd have to pay for some medications (subsidised via PBS) so maybe $100 or so over the entire period.

Why Americans don't riot over healthcare costs is beyond my reasoning.

Know someone, an American retiree, who had a leg wound that quickly went bad. After a nurse happened to see it, he was in a specialist's office the next day, and surgery the next or the day after.

Three times my father, a farmer and blue-collar worker, was found with a life-threatening condition, and each time he had specialist help right then or the day after.

My serious question for those who are on health care in other countries: How long would the retiree I know and my father would have had to wait to see a specialist?

I was more interested in why and how prices are rising this year for medical insurance.

The 'big ugly bill' that congress passed for Trump has been referred to as the largest rollback of federal support for health care in US history. It is a cut of $1 trillion for healthcare and also $120 million from SNAP all to support tax cuts for the billionaires.

Private insurance here... mine is going up by $24 per month for a family plan (6% increase). Not terrible, but when you stack it on top of the big increases that we've seen the last several years, it adds up.

Auto insurance rates will undoubtedly be going up next year as well, with the tariffs on auto parts.

Glad that Trump is keeping his word to bring prices down.

I'm in my sixties. I've had my medical insurance go up every year since I've had it. That's well over 40 years. It's why where I work (which has an insurance plan that employees and employer pay for) has changed companies at least three times. It's why some I know who's on Medicare changed companies last year. Changing companies; changing deductibles; all have pros and cons. I know rates will increase for me next year; what I don't know yet is by how much.

My wife's rose a whopping 6% - the reason - her company in not part of the Unaffordable health care program.

It seems kind of pointless to say its unaffordable when the money was just spent elsewhere.

yeah, I am in my 70s and have seen changes in my insurance over the years. No changes this year except the price, which is up more than 6%. . We are not associated with Obamacare either.

6% seems close to what I've seen, but would have to check old check stubs to be sure.
