  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump knocking down historic East Wing to build Ballroom - is this LEGAL?

Looks more like a pay-to-play scheme to me.

It looks like American companies investing in something for the nation to me. I think they are going for the free advertising myself (of articles and people discussing donors) but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt anyway.

If he used public money, you'd complain. He uses private money, you complain. Honestly, is your issue what he is doing or just the fact that he is president and you don't like that? Because there's enough legitimate issues to go after him on that pettiness like this just makes seem like sour grapes.

Well for one thing, they're both ballrooms. ;)
Pointing out that two ballrooms are similar is like pointing out that a lot of Japanese Hibachi restaurants look similar on the inside. Who would've thunk it

As an Aussie looking on - I just shake my head in wonder.

First - he was meant to be talking to the head of NATO.

Second - he decides he would rather bring out plans for his ballroom. "No body's ever seen anything like it."
(I mean - can he learn another phrase?)

Third - is this even LEGAL? Isn't there history that should be preserved? Isn't this part of a National Trust or something?

Fourth - who is paying for it?
Because now the bill's gone up to $300 MILLION.
Great estimates Trump! Nice job!

For a gaudy, golden throne-room to his NPD. I mean - I guess it makes sense to retrofit the whole place after his own heart. He owns it. According to his latest Truth Social fantasies - he's the King who poos on his people!

And this is the ultimate metaphor for it.

Tearing down the rose garden, ancient trees, and now the East Wing itself - and remaking it in his own image.
Illegal or not, It doesn't matter what Trump does. The ball is a huge waste of money. That money should of went into programs for kids. Or other good programs. The money is supposed to come from donations. But I'm sure taxes will be used. Trump is giving Billions to Argentina We lost our Soybeans account and I read Argentina will be involved in selling cows meat to America. While farmers get nothing. A shutdown because of screwing Americans out of insurance. I think our government will go bankrupt. But the White House has a expensive ballroom.

Is it seriously so hard to understand he is physically tearing down parts of an historic monument to the governance and power of this country?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

People freaked out over the removal of statues to Confederate heroes. People flipped out over Biden hosting an event with some trans people at the White House. People flipped when Obama put up some rainbow lights for a single occasion. This unpopular president decides, entirely on a whim, he's going to make a renovation that is bigger than the residence itself, to a house that doesn't belong to him. He didn't run on this in the election. No one asked for it. He hasn't gone through Congress and let the People of this nation decide if this is something that is needed or wanted. He just got a bunch of his rich buddies to put their money together and buy a part of OUR NATIONAL HOUSE. It makes me sick just to have to explain this outloud as I'm typing.

Go enjoy your palatial ballroom. Oh wait.. you can't. It's not for people like us.

Altering the white house is a fairly routine procedure that is well within the presidential prerogative. if you're really so concerned about what is happening, and not just the fact that he has the gall to do things within the presidential prerogative, then perhaps you should be lobbying congress to pass some kind of historical preservation bill to prevent future presidents from making renovations without some kind of process? What you chose to bold is telling, because it evidences that the issue truly is about him daring to be the president while being unpopular with you and not some principled objection to presidential renovation of the white house.

How is that a carbon copy? Just at first glance I'm seeing lots of differences.

Not to mention, pretty much every ballroom looks that over-the-top and tacky -- it's a ballroom after all. If you search for "most famous ballrooms in the world", you'll notice at pattern... and many have more similarities than these two do.

Does this:

Really look anymore gawdy or tacky than this?

(Le Grand Salon in Paris - regarded as one of the most "elegant" and "classy" ballrooms in Europe)
Both look pretty tacky to me.
What, were people expecting a presidential ballroom to look like a conference room at the Airport Holiday Inn? lol

So just knocking down a wall or two was what you deemed acceptable. Now you can see that it's all gone, what is your opinion?
Same as before.

A 90,000 sq foot ballroom for state functions, paid by private donors.

I’m very sure it will be used for years to come.

Thanks for asking

The issue is that he’s doing it whether anyone in the country wants this or not. He doesn’t care one way or the other. The issue is the complete silence out of the right that went practically apoplectic over Obama putting his feet on the Resolute Desk or painting some lines on a tennis court for a basketball hoop while their guy gets to knock out an entire section of the building to put a ballroom no one asked for. This issue is people like you pretending this is all normal and well and good.

Just curious, does anyone know if the additional maintenance, additional upkeep, additional custodial services, additional utilities etc for the 90,000 sq ft building will also be paid by private donors, or will taxpayers be left holding that bag for years to come?

A couple months ago, he said that the existing building wouldn't be touched and now they're just surprising us with knocking down the entire wing.
People keep repeating this misinformation. The first announcement about this project was in July, where the White House press release said the current east wing would be replaced.

No, that's the bit of propaganda that your side is running with now to pretend as if the messaging on this hasn't changed. It would seem that Trump & Co (apparently correctly) assume that you guys can't/won't bother to verify any of this through a simple google search.

Here is that press release you cited:

Nowhere in the text does it say anything about exactly how much of the East Wing was to be demolished. The text is not inconsistent with a full replacement, but it's vague enough to be not inconsistent with a lot of different plans.

The same day that press release came out, he was asked at a press conference about it, and he claimed that it would be near the existing building, but not touching it. Snopes has the video:

Now, one could argue that he was referring to just the central main residence, but either way, he was not clear at all that the East Wing would be completely demoed.
