The US city of Paterson, New Jersey, has backed an ordinance to allow the adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, to be broadcast over loudspeakers.

Under the new measure, which still has to go through two public hearings before being implemented, the adhan would be exempt from the city's noise control ordinance and allowed to be broadcast outside every day between 6am and 10pm.

The resolution was approved by council members on Tuesday by a vote of 7-0, with two members abstaining.

For more than five years I lived less than 500 feet from a mosque. There was a second one located within a half a mile. Once you become used to it, you rarely notice the call to prayer.

While Christian speech, Christmas especially religious decor, etc is decreasing, the "other" gets louder imo.

I’m sorry if my comment came across that way. I was just trying to reassure the member I replied to that the call to prayer becomes a natural part of life and isn’t bothersome.

No need to apologize! I just find Islam's 'call to prayer' extremely disturbing outside of Islamic countries and the fact it has been normalized.....it's just sad to me.
