I'm not a moral absolutist (far from it). As to your question: I have no idea as I haven't followed that story and I don't live in NJ, so I'm not sure why I should care.

Rising GOP leaders? Years ago those comments would have sunk their chances.
But they've seen that low information voters are motivated by the vile and vicious. They have chips on their shoulders and want to play the blame game for their failures.
This is not an indictment of all Trump voters. I realize there are intelligent Trump voters whose motives are beyond my powers of deduction.
In short, vile viciousness is a turn on for some voters.

Your phrasing indicates that you are trying to suggest that things are different today compared to years ago in regards to this, but by all appearances it seems they have sunk their chances with them. I haven't looked into each individual who was involved with this, but I know at least a decent number of them have lost their positions as a result of this. As is noted here:

It is not clear what you mean by "state position" but from the context of discussion on elections, I assume you're talking about people elected to legislature. The thing is, it looks to me like only one was in a state position, Samuel Douglass--and he doesn't have it anymore. As noted in the above linked article, he announced his resignation after other Republicans, most prominently the governor of his state, called on him to resign. So it seems zero of them are in state positions.
