We must remember that Jesus Christ, Himself, was persecuted and murdered for His beliefs under Roman rule. All of the disciples were also persecuted, tortured and murdered. If you go back to the annals of history, for nearly every country on earth, Christians have been persecuted, tortured and murdered en masse e.g. Ottoman empire.
The world and the history of the world is much larger than what does or doesn't happen in the US. As Americans, we can be quite myopic with regards to events and how they pertain to the rest of the world but, as I stated earlier, there is a great danger of yelling about the sky falling when we need to ensure we are teaching each other the value of resilience under predictable persecution by governments and our local society.
There is great value in understanding that these things have happened before, are likely to happen again and look to history for ways in which our predecessors survived, mitigated or overcame these trials and tribulations when they no doubt wished for an end to it all by hoping for 'end times'.
