  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why would a large corporation be ignorant of visa laws? Guess they need more lawyers and less factory expertise.
Just like our own large manufacturers which are dying behind Trump's tariff wall from too many lawyers and not enough factory expertise?

You don’t need land or raised beds. Vertical planters are ideal for people with limited space. Greenstalk is a popular brand. And before you mention the price they just had a warehouse sale. Discontinued colors were half off or more. Which was really 2-for-1.

Green Stalks are nice. But very pricey. I have a stone color. I doubt the poor can afford them.

Seeds can be purchased with SNAP and so can starts. But most of the people who qualify have no interest in gardening.

I garden. It's not the easiest. But I wish school's taught kid's the garden. I know some school's in California does. Michelle Obama tried to teach kids to garden. It would be nice if churches put gardens in the church grounds. People aren't very educated, when it comes to growing food.

The warehouse sale was good! The lowest price was $52 and $59 respectively and I grabbed a few. I’ve never seen them that low and the lids were $6. You can find less expensive options but they won’t be as sturdy. The alternative is offering to garden for someone older and splitting the harvest.

It’s a wonderful skill to learn but the majority aren’t interested. They’re accustomed to convenience and unwilling to set it aside in spite of the economy. The tariffs and rising prices didn’t spark a demand for gardening or shortage of seeds and jars didn’t sell out either.

Some organizations offer classes and you’ll find the same through job readiness programs. The majority learn at home but if you live near a farm some offer instruction or opportunities to volunteer. You’ll get hands on experience and a little produce.

Churches sound good in theory. But who will manage it and how will you secure it? Your hard work will probably be pilfered by thieves and you’d have to plan for that. I’d rather do it at home to avoid disappointment.

Gardening isn’t a hobby. It’s a lifestyle. You have to invest a lot of time, energy and willingness to learn how to do it and manage the harvest. And everything has gone up. Jars are more expensive. Lids are questionable (requiring additional purchases) not to mention the ingredients, books, tools, seeds and a place to store it all.

That’s why there’s so many homesteading channels. They fund their expenses through YouTube and take advantage of opportunities for freebies through brands. Sometimes the main thing can’t support your dream so you do something on the side to make it happen. There’s people making content who are homeless or living in shelters. You can find them on TikTok. Anything’s possible.

I just read that Trump put 100 percent tariffs on China. Like China cares. They already proved., they can get things elsewhere.

There’s a store near us that sells board games and gifts (including stuffed animals) which my son and I will go in from time to time, mainly just to look around. They are seasonal and only open around Christmas. We went there yesterday and the shelves were 30% empty. Maybe they were just starting to stock shelves, but more likely I assume it’s because of tariffs.

It really stinks for the businesses directly impacted by this. My work will be impacted directly and indirectly. What we make are luxury items. We’re paying more for materials because of tariffs, and sales are suffering because when everything else is getting more expensive, luxury items are one the first things people will cut out of their budget.

Our sales always take a hit during recessions, but this is especially bad, since it’s coming right after a period of high inflation.
