  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump plan would limit Social Security disability benefits for older Americans

Trump administration officials are considering eliminating age as a factor in deciding whether someone is capable of working.

The Trump administration is preparing a plan that will make it harder for older Americans to qualify for Social Security disability payments, part of an overhaul of the federal safety net for poor, older and disabled people that could result in hundreds of thousands of people losing benefits, according to people familiar with the plans.

So claims the Washington Post.

In case no one has noticed, bumping up full benefits age is nothing recent. It dates back to the early 1980s and has figured into my retirement plans. To hear some of the "news" organizations tell it, full benefits at 67 is something recent. Uh-uh. What's being floated is increasing it again. Why? Because of increase in the population drawing Social Security vs the number of people contributing. And that's by the words "Social Security is going broke" was already well know prior to the 1980s.

What I'm watching is to see how it's done. The last time it was raised years before the age increase went into effect.

Oh: I really should provide a link to the idea of age increase. Here's one:

The OP‘s messege was that an older person’s age wouldn’t be a factor in-favor for obtaining benefits from the disability provisions of the Social Security Act (as amended).
60 years-old and got a bad back!?
“Tough it out!” says our government, which had promised that if we were 60, couldn’t work because of a medical/mental condition, the Government would “help” us if we paid into it.

”Bait and switch” is still bait and switch if it takes eighty-years to get to the switch part.

That's exactly what you have to do to raise the retirement age and still save money. The higher up the age goes the more people will need to go on disability. So now they want to reduce disability for those older? Not really a good priority. I'd raise taxes on capital gains or raise the social security caps. Alternatively, you could have those aged 85 and up turn over assets if they still need to collect. This would be extremely fair. Some simply get far more out of social security than others. If they have no assets then SS benefits could remain to death.

It's like that here in the UK. It's almost foolish to be responsible, because if you need to go into a care home, you'll have to sell your house and give them most of the money, and you're then only allowed to have a certain amount of money, the rest gets taken for care.

Alternatively you be financially reckless your whole life and you'll probably be sat next the person above anyway.

"Bait and switch" doesn't fit. Bait and switch happens when the advertised good isn't in the store. This is altering a deal that has been altered before. Even SSI wasn't part of the original deal. Waiting to 67 for full benefits certainly wasn't.

Life expectancy has decreased recently--and if RFK, Jr. continues to promote quack remedies it will continue to decrease.
Trump needs to understand a thriving Middle class is necessary for prosperity, take off the greed glasses and see things realistically.

That is not what the OP story is about, which is changing the factors that determine whether one can claim disability insurance, not 'standard' Social Security.

Currently, the SSA uses a mix of age, work experience, and education levels to assess whether a person can transition to other types of work before approving disability payments. Applicants over 50 are generally more likely to be approved, as age is often viewed as a limiting factor in retraining or career changes. [But if age is removed from the equation, fewer people will be approved.]

Conservatives argue that reform is necessary as people live longer and that many disabled workers could move into less physically demanding desk or office jobs.

Smalligan’s research suggests that older people who lose their disability benefits often fail to transition into new roles, forcing them to tap into their retirement benefits much earlier than planned.

The overhaul is reportedly a top priority for Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, a top Trump ally and former Project 2025 architect who featured as the Grim Reaper in a bizarre AI-generated video posted by the president last week.
