  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Woman as Archbishop of Canterbury

Yes. The Church of England has been ordaining women as bishops for about 10 years.

Since we're in the "bridge-builders" forum, though, I'll note that a female Archbishop of Canterbury would be an extremely divisive choice right now. Given Canterbury's role in the Anglican Communion, and given how divisive an issue women's ordination is in the Communion, I think a male Archbishop would be a pastorally better choice. If chosen well, he might have a chance at building bridges.

Well the 2nd place job is Archbishop of York.

Could a woman be Archbishop of York ?

As we have female Bishops, there is no reason why we may not have female Archbishops.
So, yes; they could.

Do they ever call it Old York ?
No, it's just York. A number of British place names are used with "New" to make American place names. New Hampshire, New Bedford, New Kensington and New Richmond, for example.

Perhaps some bridges are not to be built. Placating a minority contrary to one's principles is the letting the tail wag the dog. I think institutional religious bodies are never going to be all things to all people.

Yep,.
Well of course.
The Church of England is so big it encompasses Anglo-Catholics and low evangelicals. My childhood church was CofE. We had a music group - guitars, woodwind, a violin etc and informal services - and also 1662 communion with a robed choir (and about 6 in the congregation.)
Such a diverse mix sounds great, until there are differences of opinion. "High" Anglican clergy left the CofE as soon as women were ordained.

But just because something has been done a certain way for many years, it does not prove that it is the right thing to do and must never be changed or questioned.

There is a possibilty of a solution - boring to read, but geeks might want to click here - Nairobi-Cairo Proposals. In short the proposals would restructure the Anglican Communion and shift where the global power is, enabling everyone to keep their faith/principles and without having to leave the Communion.

This is England, where a lot of people do not understand the sentence you have written there.

True.

They probably would have argued when God got rid of the Tabernacle and told Solomon to build a temple. Or when it was destroyed and animal sacrifices ceased.
