  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They should cut the pay of all Senators and Congressional Reps. No pay for the military - no pay for Congress.

Wow! Then why was it Schumer and his friends who cast the deciding votes that shut down the government?
This is the undeniable evidence that Trump is not in charge of the entire government and hes not an authoritarian AND there still is a separation of powers.

Where does the buck stop?

The Commander in Chief owns this shutdown. The Republican majority will do whatever he says.
I see, so you WANT him to be an authoritarian. Got it.

It sounds like we get to see how well Republicans negotiate.
Once again we see how tge left works. When the Democrats are in power and the government shuts down its the Republicans fault. When the Republicans are in power and the government shuts down its the Republicans fault.

Tell me, when would a government shut down be the Democrats fault?

When the democrats have control of all three branches and refuse to negotiate with the minority party they need to secure enough votes, you can blame it squarely on them.

Are you capable of formulating your own arguments, or are you just going to link Fox News articles?

That article, incidentally, doesn't say what you think it says (or, at least, it doesn't relate to my post - I can't tell what you actually think it says because you didn't provide any of your own thoughts). It's about state funding, and the possibility that some states might (incorrectly) request federal reimbursement for care that they grant to illegal immigrants under their state laws. Neither version of the federal law (the changes made in the BBB or the original version I linked) makes that legal.

Check out this article which refutes what you have said about free federally funded health-care for illegal immigrants.

When the democrats have control of all three branches
Maybe even just the House.

Shutdowns:

1995 GOP House
1996 GOP House
2013 GOP House
January 2018 GOP House (and the first shutdown with the GOP holding all three)
December 2018 GOP House
2024 close calls GOP House [spending bills were twice signed after midnight, but no shutdown occurred]
2025 GOP House (and the second shutdown with the GOP trifecta)

The shutdown is merely exposing the difficult truth that no-one notices when the government is shut down.

If no-one even notices or cares that the government is shut down, how important can it really be?

And by the way, even if "essential" services are kept open - does that mean that the government funds "non-essential" services?

Alright, let's use our brains. WHAT did I say about federally-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, and HOW does this article refute it?

It's been less than 24 hours, and plenty of people have noticed.
And by the way, even if "essential" services are kept open - does that mean that the government funds "non-essential" services?
Some services are deemed more essential than others. Just because a task can be put off for a few days or a few weeks does not mean that it isn't essential.

You were discussing health care. I provided an article with facts showing that the Democratic Party wants to provide free health care to illegal immigrants.

What specifically about healthcare?
I provided an article with facts showing that the Democratic Party wants to provide free health care to illegal immigrants.
List these facts, and explain how (you think) they refute my argument.

It feels like I'm teaching a middle school debate class. Yeesh.

I'm posting during my breaks at work. I don’t have the time to debate you like I debated my fellow college students back in the 80s.

Thanks for supporting my point. It doesn't matter who's in control, how much or how little they arw in control its always the Republicans fault when there is a shutdown in the eyes of the left.

Its baloney and you know it.

This shut down is on the Democrats.

These 6 Charts Explain Why the Government Shut Down Gift Article

Since most of its provisions went into effect in 2014, Obamacare has been stunningly successful at reducing the ranks of the uninsured: from 44.4 million in 2013 to 26.7 million in 2016.

Then three months ago, Congress passed its huge tax and spending package (known as the One Big Beautiful Bill). Tucked into that legislation were a number of granular, difficult-to-comprehend changes to the government piece of our health care system, particularly Medicaid.

Today Americans making less than $150,000 a year who bought insurance on one of the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges can receive a tax credit to offset part of the cost of their coverage. Republicans chose not to extend that tax break in the tax and spending bill. Now, without government intervention, it will expire at the end of the year. That could be responsible for more than a quarter of the lost coverage, and it’s likely to be the focal point of any negotiations during a possible shutdown.

Democrats are fighting to preserve an Obamacare tax credit. Without it, a 55-year-old couple making $85K would see their premiums more than triple to $24,535.
