  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

President Donald Trump has struck a multi-pronged deal with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to lower the price of some of the company’s medicines, while clearing a path for the drugmaker to receive a three-year reprieve from certain tariffs.

The drugmaker will participate in a new direct purchasing platform named TrumpRx.gov that will let American patients buy a “large majority” of its primary care treatments and “some select specialty brands” at a discount. Those drugs will be offered at “savings that will range as high as 85% and on average 50%,” Pfizer said in a press release Tuesday.

The deal comes after Trump demanded that 17 of the largest drugmakers voluntarily offer their medicines at levels similar to what they charge other nations.

So what happens if tariffs are illegal? Also, when will we see a price list? What about pharmas providing low income Americans with medicine that they cannot afford? (Some do this now, in some cases for free). I sure hope TrumpRX.Gov does not later become TrumpRX.com
Trump's side deals in tariffs and all other matters is interesting. Some are like: If I buy my car from the Trump dealership, I am free from having to obey some traffic laws. Talk about big government too? Where is the idea of equality under the law?

Technofeudalism in action. Oligarchs get personal set asides, and the rest of the public has to live off the largesse and pantronage of the oligarchs.

In this case, it's not so much getting to avoid laws, as it is getting to avoid certain taxes.

It's a mechanism by which a government entity can "steer" companies towards falling in line their agenda, short of using a direct mandate. ...and acts as a "loss of profits offset" of sorts...

So it's closer to the realm of things like Green Energy tax breaks that some states offer, in which, the government entity says "hey, look, we know it'd technically be a little cheaper and more profit-maximizing if you used traditional energy sources for the construction process, but we'll knock 30% off the normal taxes and regulatory fees we'd normally levy, if you agree to go with the low-emissions approaches our administration is trying to advance."

As far what would happen if the tariffs are deemed to be illegal by some regulatory body or higher court, that would be create a series of challenges since certain trade deals are already signed, and those would still technically be legally binding.

It would also impact the private sector, as certain companies have inked deals with entities in other countries (based on the tariff framework). If those got removed/revoked, that would create something of a legal mess. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that no one federal judge is going to want to be the one who kicks that hornets nest.

Yes, the case is fastracked now to the Supreme Court. They are scheduled to hear arguments in the first week in Nov. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
