  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I would have thought it was the clunky fashion sense.
That is also true. Whenever my in-laws visit us in the US or we visit them, I always find myself underdressed, whether it's for a gathering at home or a trip to a 500-year-old church. Americans tend to prioritize comfort in clothing, while Europeans prefer a more formal dress code.

Next year the US is hosting the World Cup. That is a HUUUUUUUGE worldwide event.

Do you think that the immigration "crackdown" we see happenning now is going to affect attendance? There has been a NOT AT ALL subtle drop in tourism to the US in the last year.

Do you think World Cup organizers and FIFA are a bit anxious as they watch this unfold?

Personally, I would be. I will bet numbers will be lower for this WC in the United Sates and it will directly be attributable to curent policy.

On the plus side, hopefully Canada will get a BIG boost in tourism! I'd even heard talk of shifting some games from the US up to Canada (but that is all rumour at this point).
Perhaps, the amount of tourism will depend on how many players Trump refuses to allow to enter the US.

I was born and raised in the UK and now live in NYC.

Hostility to the US among Europeans is not exactly a new thing that suddenly appeared with Trump.
The Ugly American has been a characterization for a hundred years, or more.

‘It would be impossible.’ Trump’s pledge to move World Cup matches unlikely to succeed

More than three years after 11 U.S. cities were awarded the right to host games during next summer’s World Cup and just two months before the tournament draw, President Trump is threatening to move matches out of places he considers “a little bit dangerous.”

“If any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup, or for the [2028] Olympics … but for the World Cup in particular, because they’re playing in so many cities, we won’t allow it,” Trump said.

“They’re run by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they’re doing,” Trump said.

Seattle is scheduled to host six games, including a group-stage match featuring the U.S. Six matches will also be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, about 40 miles south of San Francisco. The tournament will kick off June 11 and end July 19 with the final in East Rutherford, N.J.

The president did not mention Inglewood, which will stage eight matches — including at least two U.S. games — at SoFi Stadium. The eight other U.S. host cities are Atlanta; Boston; Arlington, Texas; Houston; Kansas City, Mo., Miami; East Rutherford, N.J.; and Philadelphia.

Trump does not have the authority to relocate World Cup matches, which are overseen by FIFA, soccer’s global governing body. But FIFA leader Gianni Infantino, who Trump calls his “great friend,” has given in to the president before. Just last month, FIFA agreed to Trump’s unusual request to move the World Cup draw, which will set the matchups for the group stage, to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

Trump wouldn’t have to move games to make things difficult for cities he disfavors, however. In July, Congress allocated $625 million in federal funds for World Cup security. According to Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House World Cup task force chaired by Trump, cities will submit their expenditures with requests for reimbursement, but the task force will have wide latitude in deciding which bills to pay.

???

This is the US. Our head of state isn't an all-powerful monarch.

Trump can certainly advise and even threaten to cancel games for an "emergency" at the last minute.

In the end, it is the state and local officials who should tell FIFA whether they believe that games would be safe at certain venues.

Trump believes that he should be the head policeman for every city. This is new for us.

Because U.K. and European media portray America in the worst possible light. Have you ever visited here?
Living here all my life and paying some attention to UK and European media, I would say they were about right.

I agree. Just take Trump's 'speech' at the UN. How else are you going to report it other than it was stunningly unhinged.

Checks the dictionary definition of 'statesman':

a skilled, experienced, and respected political leader or figure.

You're obviously using a different definition.

You might check Article 1, Section 8: Article 1, Section 8, US Constitution

He is skilled, and more importantly he's right. Whether you acknowledge or respect that is up to you.

Whether I acknowledge that he is skilled and 'right' is pretty meaningless. It's how the rest of the world sees him. A very short heads up from here about how others saw his UN speech: Press Review - 'Deranged', 'staggering', 'incoherent': Papers react to Trump's UN speech

British Dail Mail called it 'deranged'.
French Libération calls the speech "staggering", "violent" and "incoherent".
Spanish daily El País: Trump's aim is to "blow up the rules of the international game".
Germany's Die Zeit says that Trump's accusations are "becoming crazier every minute".

And as he posted on Truth:

'It was a great honor to speak before the United Nations. I believe the speech was very well received...The teleprompter was broken and the escalator came to a sudden hault (sic) as we were ridding (sic) up to the podium, but both of those events probably made the speech more interesting than it would have been otherwise.'

But no less embarrassing.

What you fail to understand is that most of the rest of the world is wrong, and the more they dislike him, the more we like him.

I don't have to base my opinions of the guy on what almost everyone else thinks. I can see it myself. That so many people also consider him an embarrassment to the US doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
...and the more they dislike him, the more we like him.
That's kind of a concern to be honest.
