  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The new Quinnipiac University Poll released on Tuesday found 53% of citizens believe American democracy is not working right now, compared to 41% of Americans who believe the system is going fine.

Those on the left, unsurprisingly, were much more likely to say the figurative house is burning down, with 74% of polled Democrats saying “the system of democracy in the United States is not working”; only 22% of Republicans said it is not working, and 74% of GOP voters said there is no problem at all.

Now ask the 74% of GOP members who say democracy is working how many believe the 2020 election was not won legitimately by President Biden.

Democracy is often questioned when the opposition is in power—claims arise about a broken system, corrupt agencies, or a fake market—but when one's own party is leading, everything is considered fine.

Funny how it used to work just fine. What changed? Could it be the old ways of the old democratic nations got overrun by outsiders bringing in failed societies? If the world can't get along globally why would anyone expect it to get along when compressed in a nation?

There are a lot of different ways to run a country and if it was run as intended, it would run beautifully. The problem is that no matter what system you have in a country, when corruption gets in, it will fail.

People just don't like taking turns. They take the easy way out and cherish divisiveness because they are incapable of compromise, preferring to be self-serving. It is not the systems fault, but the people's. God has been saying this about us since the Garden

Most countries have never been run as intended. It usually devolves as power is consolidated.

Power seeks to serve itself eventually. That is its downfall. As an example, look at how the unelected health world leaders are whining their self-appointed authourity is being questioned. That applies to all sorts including in religion.

Plenty of examples available.

Yeah, the same party that removed their duly elected candidate, who got 17 million votes in the primary, and replaced him with a candidate who got zero votes, is saying democracy is not working. They must be confessing to the party's sin. Other than that, democracy is working fine. This is why we say the Democratic Party is tone deaf. They don't hear what they are saying and cannot see that they are doing what they blame others for doing. The real issue is that they do not know what "democracy" means, and they do not know that the US is not a democracy. Democracy happens every 2, 4, and 6 years. As long as we keep our elections fair, democracy is working.

I'd be inclined to agree that the American version of democracy is pretty much laughable but it seems weird that now people are realizing it.

If this poll was taken after biden's election the results would be backwards.

Historically, democracies only lasted up to about 250 years. How old is America? What happens when a democracy falls?

Grok AI:
Historically, when democracies have collapsed or severely backslid, they have most often been replaced by some form of authoritarian system, such as military dictatorships, oligarchies, personalist regimes, or elected autocracies that maintain a democratic facade while eroding core institutions. This pattern holds across ancient and modern examples, though the transitions vary—ranging from violent coups to gradual subversion by elected leaders. While recoveries are possible (e.g., ancient Athens briefly returned to democracy after oligarchic interludes), the immediate successor is typically non-democratic.

Yes, democracy only works when your guy wins. Hope they retake the poll after the midterms.

Democracy is working for some and less for others. The US gained over 3,500 wealthy individuals from other nations and the Trump card is part of that. And as the chart shows millionaire growth is up 78%. Global movement is the real thing they're watching. It can bring significant investment or be catastrophic to an economy when departing like the UK. Trump is courting them.

Odd. I though we lived in a Republic.

Yeah, the same party that removed their duly elected candidate,
No party has removed their candidate. There is a recent example where a candidate for reelection personally chose to discontinue his campaign, though.

who got 17 million votes in the primary, and replaced him with a candidate who got zero votes, is saying democracy is not working.
Did that candidate face the voters in a general election before assuming office? I'd call that democracy in action. Unlike if, say, one person were appointed to the VP office, and then later succeeded a President who resigned, thus becoming President without ever participating in any election whatsoever. That could be considered an example of democracy not working, I suppose.

They must be confessing to the party's sin. Other than that, democracy is working fine. This is why we say the Democratic Party is tone deaf. They don't hear what they are saying and cannot see that they are doing what they blame others for doing. Unless one branch of government attempts to consolidate power and the other two branches chose to either capitulate to that power grab or become complicit in that consolidation.

It does not take a lot of reading Scripture to see, IF God Permits,

that democracy failed from the get go. It is a worldly concern, not serving God. It serves money.
