  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Charlie Kirk shooting suspect Tyler Robinson could face firing squad

Not according to Utah State law. If you don't like it, take it up with them.

Which US assassin was executed in the last century? We've had more than a couple back in the sixties. Even Charlie Manson died of old age.

Manson didn't physically kill anyone.

I felt that this aspect of the conversation deserves its own thread, as it's a specific facet of the conversation that shouldn't get lost in the sea of the other matters relating to this topic.

With the high-profile killings that have recently happened, would death penalty being carried out on Tyler Robinson (should he be convicted) be warranted?

I ask that question with the caveat.

Normally I'm against the death penalty. But in this instance, would the death penalty being carried out by firing squad be a "pressure release valve" of sorts that could stave off more extreme outcomes (that could cause even more deaths) resulting from pent up "need for retributive justice"?

I think of what Obama (and a bipartisan plurality of politicians) said regarding his decision to give Seal Team Six the "go ahead" to take out Bin Laden. (and no, I'm not comparing Tyler to Bin Laden in terms of the scale of crimes, just using it to highlight the overall concept)

The decision was described with comments in the theme of "justice and closure". (emphasis on the closure part)

Now, the decision could've just as easily been "we'll find the right time to capture him, and bring him back to the US to stand trial, and give him life in prison", but they obviously went the other way on that.

Is that a direct appeal to the baser urges of human nature and the "need for vengeance as a form of closure"? Obviously...

But I think they understood that "he's just going to locked up forever" wouldn't have given a lot of people the same level of closure as knowing that a bunch of Seal Team Six guys lit him up like a Christmas Tree.

I do think one can make a pragmatic case for why the death penalty is the lesser of evils (in the long term) in some specific cases.

If people don't get that sense that "actual justice has been done", they'll start finding irrational ways to seek out that sense of closure, and you'll start getting a bunch of Bernie Goetz copycats on the subways.

Thoughts?

Tyler seems more delusional to me than pure evil. He sounds like he reacted to his MAGA republican dad; the whole gay/trans thing must have been an interesting talking point at the dinner table. Did they have their guns next to the fork or the knife beside their plate? Think they were both right-handed so probably next to the knife. Clearly, he has no Christian morality governing his life, and this is by his own choice, but it is not impossible that a long prison sentence could lead to salvation. If I were his dad, I would be praying for that rather than his execution, even by way of example. Salvation before posturing to the baying mob to win votes in the midterms.

If you have a cute family you can just say anything and youre completely immune from scrutiny.
I honestly can't tell if its a post intentionally being disingenuous, or just absurdly obtuse about the criticism levied at Kirk. Its baffling.

Scrutinize away! I've seen celebrations of his death, but not much scrutinizing of Kirk himself. Seems like there's not much about him that we can fault him for. If there was, it would have come out by now.

Ive heard some things he said that are truly disturbing. But none of that counts because he has a cute family.

Well, there ya go then. You're invited to state what offensive things Charlie Kirk has said, and you aren't able to come up with any.

I sure did! Too bad they'll never see their father again because he supposedly said something someone found offensive.

I'll give you one, what is the spin regarding this one.
If we would have said that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative action picks, we would have been called racists. Now they’re coming out and they’re saying it for us … You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously.

– The Charlie Kirk Show, 13 July 2023

How is this not problematic? Do they not have they brain processing power to be taken seriously, in your opinion?

I've got more but we can take them one by one.

Considering that he then plays the video of what he's referring to, which is Sheila Jackson Lee admitting that she's there due to affirmative action, how is his statement incorrect?

It's the statement about brain processing power that is problematic, do they or do they not have enough brain processing power to be taken somewhat seriously? And how did he determine it?

You agree each of them “stole a white person’s job to be somewhat taken seriously”?

You agree with that statement?

It's the statement about brain processing power that is problematic, do they or do they not have enough brain processing power to be taken somewhat necessary?
Or that any of their jobs are entitled to a white person.

Wrong reason.

its because someone though murder was an acceptable solution.

If she was using her brain's processing power and could only process affirmative action as to why she should be representing her constituents, then I would say she certainly wasn't processing very well when she made that statement.
I'll also point out that people should be able to demonstrate the ability to use their brain to think clearly when doing an important job. I'm sure I'll be called racist for this, but I'd rather have a white man who has shown competency as the pilot of my plane than a black woman who is in the pilot's seat mainly through affirmative action because the airline wanted to be more "inclusive". Same goes for any other important or influencial position, such as being a representative in the House or Senate.

So in what way were Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson lacking in brain power and how did Charlie Kirk deterrmine it?

Apparently, they also claimed to have gotten their positions through affirmative action as well. I didn't see a clip of them claiming that in the video that was posted a link to earlier, but if they did then they were basically saying it about themselves that they didn't get to where they are through hard work, or skills they have, or training, or anything else that requires brain processing power, but rather their skin color.
