Also there's the inescapable fact that a gun can be obtained by someone from a private gun owner who's passed extensive mental health screening. Private gun sales, trades and giveaways happen all the time. Many are in possession of firearms that were passed down from a deceased family member. I would have gotten one of my dad's guns after he passed away if I had wanted it.

The goal seems to be to get involuntary commitments on LGBT folks records to disqualify them from owning firearms. This would require broadening the criteria for involuntary commitment quite a bit. Even if the change to the DSM happened, people need to be a threat to themselves or others not just diagnosed as mentally ill or “gender bending” to be involuntary committed.
