  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Arming teachers is ridiculous. How would you like to be a teacher with a gun when the cops arrive? A black teacher with a gun? A black male teacher with a gun?

It's utter nonsense.
under that logic people should shoot in self defense anywhere.

What are you talking about?

You know the police are going to shoot first and ask questions later. You are now a dead teacher.
If you put your gun up before cops get there that is not an issue again under your logic people should not shoot in self defense because what happens when the cops show up?

What quality of life would the person have there are times when saving people is frankly selfish.
Clearly a wretched quietly of life as how could they exist knowing there’s more paperwork and wait times for owning guns?

I am talking about cases where people are ill (usually terminal and have been for qute a while keeping people alive just to keep them alive is not fair to them.

"Would be"? We were talking about whether bans that have been enacted really mean anything.
As for effectiveness, they haven't meant anything but for the law-abiding.

Plus, "ban" can mean a lot of things. As for me I would not propose anything that eliminates an individual right to own firearms.
How about the right to actually use them? Proposals have gone forth to tax ammunition 10,000%, which makes the guns available to be owned, but oppressively expensive to use. That would be like charging $50,000 to have a driver's license in response to people drunk driving, or $100 per gallon of gas to reduce traffic deaths. Just a method of blanketly eliminating something while not prohibiting someone from having it.
California even had a law that required background checks every time ammunition was bought. It's been struck down as unconstitutional. But I've never seen any numbers showing that California's crime rate had gone down while the ammo background check was in effect. Handguns there have to be registered too. Still, people there still find ways to shoot each other with them.

From the latest press conference, 14 children between the ages of 6 and 15 sustained gunshot wounds and three adults in their 80s were wounded. All are expected to survive.

A It is likely that we are "too far gone" for limiting access.
I guess it must be better to not try to improve things rather than to try to improve things?

You know the police are going to shoot first and ask questions later. You are now a dead teacher.
Then don't call the police when a mass shooting happens. Problem solved.

Of course an isolated gun ban here or there isnt effective. We already talked about that. And so I dont want to hear about "but weve tried gun bans" ever again. Its not seemly for thinking people.

No, I would not make ammo a rich person only purchase.

Maybe 6 or 7 school mass shootings ago I posted my list of what i would do. Perhaps if I have some time later I'll try to find it. I dont keep this at top of mind.

What do you mean by a ban "here or there"? There are entire states such as California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Washington, along with the District of Columbia that ban the AR15. What has that accomplished? Those are all states run by democrats too.

"Gosh I can buy a brand new AR-15. Guess I have to cancel that school shooting I was planning."

Now it sounds like you're blaming people who own guns for the acts of a few criminals.
It’s more blaming the society that allows people very easy access to a very efficient tool invented specifically for killing and people who facilitate gun culture.

Felons aren't allowed to buy/own guns. Underage people aren't allowed to buy them. Background checks are needed, and an efficient method of processing them is in place.
Define "gun culture".
From what I've found: Despite common themes, there is no single American gun culture; rather, there are diverse subcultures based on location and individual perspectives, such as recreational use, self-defense, or the defense of the Second Amendment itself.
Is that what you find to be troublesome?

Meaning dont pick one specific type of restriction that anyone can see will do nothing and then conclude that restrictions generally cant ever work. (I dont care if its the D's who did it. I'm not here in this topic to defend D's above all else.)

Honestly, this particular topic really brings out the worst in reasoned discussion. Like "guns dont kill people". Ugh.

Romans 1:
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

I did. They removed the vast majority of guns in civilian hands. School shooting are now vanishingly uncommon.
