  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

US ‘strongly rejects’ French plan to recognise Palestine, Saudis hail ‘historic decision’

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio blasted French President Emmanuel Macron decision to recognise a Palestinian state as “reckless” while Saudi Arabia described it as “historic” as world reactions to the plan poured in ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting in September.

UK to recognize Palestinian state unless Israel relents and revives two-state solution

"Today, as part of this process towards peace, I can confirm the U.K. will recognize the state of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution," Starmer said at a news conference.

So basically, bring everything back to how it was before October 7th?

When that statehood is offered to them, will they take the deal? Or turn it down like they've done in the past?

One of the better two-state deals was offered to them under Bill Clinton (which would've given them all of Gaza, and 96% of the West Bank -- with a land swap to account for the 4% of the WB that Israel would keep, allowing Palestine to be one contiguous territory via corridor systems)

They shot it down.

I've been pretty critical of Israel as of late, but fair is fair... The Palestinian leadership hasn't had a great track record with regards to accepting a good deal when it's offered to them.

Good point. Palestinian leadership doesn't want a two-state solution. They want to eradicate Israel. Pretty hard to find a middle ground.

While I certainly don't consider Netanyahu to be a good faith actor in any of this (which his actions and lack of trustworthiness will be used as an excuse to turn down the deal without losing face)

Ehud Barak was arguably the most Palestinian-friendly Israeli PM their country ever had. (he was popular enough with them that Arab-Israeli voters actually helped him beat Netanyahu in the 1999 elections they held)

I had to go back and look at the details of the deal Ehud Barak was putting on the table to refresh my memory, I misspoke before by a little bit, but I wasn't far off.

- Israel would annex parts of the West Bank (roughly 9%) but give land swaps to the Palestinians to make up for it in order to build a corridor between the two territories
- Palestine would get all of Gaza
- Shared sovereignty and special arrangements for the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif.
- 5 year sunset on Israeli military presence
- Shared sovereignty for Jerusalem (the one and only time that's ever been offered)
- Limited "right of return" (with a compensation fund to pay Palestinians who wouldn't be able to pursuant to the land swaps)
- Settlement freeze

Arafat shot it down for reasons of "full right of return" and "No Jewish presence in Arab lands" and "river to the sea" reasoning.

So yeah, you can't exactly negotiate or find a middle ground on that. Israel was meeting them 75% of the way to their position in the Camp David Summit negotiations in 2000, and they still turned it down.

Trump threatens trade deal over Canada's Palestine stance

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement earlier Wednesday, stating it would officially make the mostly symbolic move in September at the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump took to his Truth Social late Wednesday to deride the announcement.

"Wow!" he said in the statement. "That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them."

Australia to recognize Palestinian state, leaving US increasingly isolated among key allies

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday that his country will recognize a Palestinian state in September, joining a growing list of Western allies as international condemnation and anger builds over Israel’s actions in Gaza.

A formal recognition will be made at the United Nations General Assembly next month, where “Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own predicated on the commitments Australia has received from the Palestinian Authority,” Albanese said at a press conference.

I think counties are getting tired of Trump's threats. They will get their stuff somewhere else. There's plenty of countries that can supply goods to other countries. And slowly stop getting stuff in America. As far as Palestine becoming a state, who cares.

It's one thing to say it, it's another thing to actually follow through come September...

If I were a betting man, I'd say there's a 50/50 chance one or more of them bail on that
(if the Israeli government is the shadowy powerful figure they claim it is)

If the Mossad is the entity we've been led to believe it is, you can believe they have operatives working around the clock looking for any whiff of sexual and/or financial improprieties (or manufacturing the conditions for some new ones) and digging into peoples' backgrounds to be used as leverage to get them "think better of it" in the coming weeks.

The US has zero leverage with France . France has nuclear weapons and doesn't have to kow-tow to Rubio/Trump demands. Trump has made himself irrelevant anyways by backing out of any kind of internationalism.

UK, Canada, Australia formally recognize Palestinian state; Netanyahu vows ‘it will not happen’

The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia on Sunday announced the recognition of the Palestinian state, in the hope that a two-state solution will bring peace with Israel despite protests from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move is intended "to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis."

"Hamas is a brutal terror organization," Starmer said, adding that Hamas will have "no future, no role in government, no role in security," in a Palestinian state.

These so called nations should be put on the list of global supporters of terrorism. How dare they defy the will of our Jewish overlords go against an important ally, democracy, important partner in the war on terror, and global stabilizing nation.

The two state solution died October 7th, these nonsense recognitions don't change the reality of the situation.

Forgive my ignorance, but for those who don’t recognize Palestine as a state, then what is it considered? Aren’t Israel and Palestine two separate countries?

Problem is that in any democratic state will be a Hamas state, I'm sure they will rebadge it like the Sinn Fein and IRA but Hamas has through action like the current recognition has entrenched itself as the voice and power of Palestinians people.

For better or worse terrorism has been rewarded. Along with bipartisan policy in Australia on this topic.
(That is not to say that the excess of Isreal is not an evil in this awful situation)

I still believe that the best solution is Egypt to control Gaza and Jordan the East Bank, then 20 years of development leading to a Palestinin state, with leaders that are not up beyond their elbows in horrendous actions. A Palestine that is lead by Hamas or a Hamas proxy., will just continue the endless cycle of bloodshed,

I consider it a partially recognized, partially self governing pariah. It isn't a country, it's a terrorist enclave. Every time they are given a chance at democracy they choose to go the path of pariah and launch pad for attacks on Israel. They have instituted rebellion and strife in any country that they have lived in, Jordan, Lebanon, the "West Bank" (Judea and Samaria), Egypt, Gaza. They attempted to overthrow the government of Jordan and were expelled.

There is Israel proper, and then there are the Occupied Territories. The main ones being Gaza (occupied Egyptian land) and the West Bank (occupied Jordanian land).

There is a Palestinian Authority government, which has some international recognition, but as yet, it doesn't really have a country to go with it.
