Political commentators Tucker Carlson and Stephen K. Bannon recently discussed their mutual discernment that the United States is engulfed in a spiritual war, and that palpable forces of evil are concentrated in Washington, D.C.

During a Monday interview on Carlson’s platform that focused primarily on the war between Israel and Iran, he and Bannon ended up discussing their sense that an oppressive spiritual force is active in the nation's capital, especially since the political upheaval in 2021.

“When you come to Washington, you can really feel it’s a spiritual war because of the dark specter that hangs over this town,” said Bannon, who lives there and served as an advisor to President Donald Trump during his first term. “That spiritual war manifests itself in money and power.” He added that he personally knows people who have been corrupted by both.

I agree completely. I may, however, not agree with these guys about who represents the evil forces.

I agree. I would not go to either of the for any spiritual discernment.

Why would going to them for spiritual discernment an issue? A person can agree without "going to them " for discernment.
Let me rephrase. I would not pay any attention to them on any issue of faith or spirituality.

Yeah. It would be like getting culinary training from Hannibal Lecter.

Of course Washington is "corrupt", in the sense of most politicians having mixed motivations and undue personal gain from what is supposed to be impersonal process (is any human process, BTW, ever impersonal, or does this expose a certain liberal naivite behind western Enlightenment proceduralism?). That's hardly a revelatory statement. But some things are worse than mixed motives or a flawed ideology (Enlightenment liberalism), like promotion of hate and mayhem that Bannon and Carlson champion as the "solution". The Vandals sacking Rome wasn't a vindication of the Vandals, just because Rome was a flawed institution, and neither is the collapse of the Eisenhower consensus vindication of Bannon's "dark enlightenment", just because Liberalism obviously has flaws.

The blasphemy is that they dress it all in religious terms.

Bannon's just an angry cultural Catholic. What happens when Irish-Catholicism goes to rot, confusing generational trauma and dysfunction with wisdom. Mixed with his own occult ideas derived from Julius Evola and Guenon.

Carlson is similarly a cultural Episcopalian that's made a grift out of being a reactionary. That's his "brand". He's the most shallow of the two.

What evil force do they represent? An actual Christian vision for society? I can see how that would scare liberals and progressives

Well Carlson's Episcopalianism is more ironic given that as a Church it stands for nothing except progressivism and Tucker recognizes this and makes fun of the Church as such. Which is a reasonable position given you don't even have to believe Jesus is God incarnate to be a respected member of the Church.

His views are not mere grift either but as far as I can tell are genuine. Do you just not like that there's an actual audience for traditional and dissident views that reject your liberal progressive worldview?
