Gov. DeSantis declares "Freedom Summer" [Now Freedom Summer 2!] by banning most of the rainbow for bridge lighting displays

I'm guessing that the whole thing is fabricated as a way of distracting people from DeSantis' ethical and political problems.

Ron DeSantis’s fall from grace: ‘He’s completely crashed to the ground’
Florida governor stands isolated from Trump and is feuding with Republicans at home – is he drifting to irrelevance?
“He’s completely crashed to the ground at this point and is certainly being treated like a more standard, average governor now,” said Aubrey Jewett, professor of political science at the University of Central Florida.

“He’s lost the ability to push things through. He’s lost that luster he had that at one time seemed like he could do no wrong in Republican conservative circles. He’s definitely come back down to earth and some of it is his own doing because if you govern with an autocratic style, that doesn’t usually make you a lot of allies.”

DeSantis’s once vise-like grip on Florida’s lawmakers has weakened, replaced by open dissent, bitter hostility and a hurling of slurs over a number of issues as the two Republican dominated legislative chambers try to reverse six years of passivity and reestablish themselves as a co-equal branch of government.

DeSantis, in the words of Florida’s Republican House speaker, Daniel Perez, has begun to tell “lies and stories that never happened”, and has become increasingly prone to “temper tantrums”.

The governor, meanwhile, hit back at what he sees as a “pathetic” agenda being pursued by the majority. He has also lashed out at their investigation of a charity scandal enveloping his wife, Casey DeSantis, as she mulls whether to run in next year’s election to succeed him when he is termed out of office in January 2027.

Some Republicans, including Perez, want to know how $10m of a $67m legal settlement intended for Florida taxpayers ended up channeled through Hope Florida, a non-profit that Casey DeSantis founded, to political actio
n committees operated by her husband’s allies to help quash ballot amendments last year on abortion and marijuana.

What makes red, white and blue any cooler than orange, yellow, green, indigo or violet?

I don't know about "cooler" (visually)

But I would think that publicly funded lighting/decoration displays should aim to incorporate as much of the public as possible.

And as it currently stands, "Red/White/Blue", the nation's colors, is the only thing that applies to all citizens...vs the others, that only apply to a subset.

I'm not crazy about the notion of publicly funded displays being used to promote one ideological viewpoint over another on a contentious issue.

It's spending public money to create additional problems where problems don't need to exist. It's the same reason why I wouldn't want to see a publicly funded "pro-life" or "pro-choice" bridge lighting display.

We don't need to burn tax dollars to annoy half of the population. Seems like there's already a multitude of ways to do that for free.

He's for sale. He once assailed the Qatari nation for supporting terrorism, he now praises them, after they gifted him a $400 million airplane.

Defying DeSantis, Florida Pride Marchers Light Up Jacksonville Bridge with Rainbow Colors

LGBT Floridians demonstrated that they didn’t need state permission for queer visibility.

[Last year they did this as well.]

This year, as the hordes of rally-goers approached the Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville, flashlights in tow, the drawbridge began to rise—with no warning and no boats approaching, organizers told Erin in the Morning. The bridge stayed upright until the marchers turned around and left, but they didn’t go home.

Instead, organizers pivoted and walked to the nearby Acosta Bridge, which is contiguous.

The governor’s office and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) did not respond to requests for comment as to whether the bridge had been raised for the purpose of stifling the march.

I'm not sure how one could think that the colors red, white, and blue are exclusionary, since they represent the country we all live in.

See, now that sounds like a petty rant to me.

Red, White and Blue (okay, technically white, blue and red), patriotic Russian colors!

Frankly, I don't care what color the lights are. I just find it amusing to watch people get "their panties in a bunch" because they can't light up a bridge in their preferred color scheme.

I guess you think the same should apply to Christians (and even Trump) who complain about not being to have Christmas displays on public land?

Huh? What does this have to do with lighting a bridge up in red white and blue?

Honestly, I'm inclined to believe that the marchers did it just to pwn the notoriously homophobic governor of Florida. Apparently, they succeeded beyond their expectations. Someone should pay to skywrite "ROY G. BIV" over the governor's mansion.

Have you not seen Trump's penthouse?

I imagine it's pretty close to Dolly Parton's idea of what the waiting room in a bordello should look like.

Not at all. Appreciating men for acting outside stereotypical gender norms is the opposite of sexist.
Ah, it was appreciation for him that you were showing. Well good for you then. I took it wrong. Nice to know you agree with us that men can operate outside stereotypical gender norms and still be men.
