What is the point of the gift if not to get something in return from Trump?
Ask all of the many foreign leaders who have in the past given gifts to this nation. You are letting Trump live rent free in your head, to borrow the phrase from Tom Holman,

He’s the President and does something daily to get himself in the media. I’d charge him for his attention seeking if I could.

Regardless, it would be cost prohibitive for this “gift” to replace the current AF1. I thought he was all about stopping wasteful spending?

No bribe! Not a personal gift to Trump. Perfectly legal. Has been done multiple times in the past. Another example of liberals trying to get Trump on some “trumped” up charge.
Another fine example of Poe’s Law!

You are focused on the value. There have been other gifts worth large sums. This just happens to be a larger one. You seem so focused on getting Trump you can’t see the forest for the trees. It is irrelevant that no one has previously given an airplane. Presidents do not own air force one, Trump does not own this one. Find a real issue this one is a non starter. Other gifts have wound up in presidential libraries show us where you were concerned about that or a legal cap on value for gifts from another country.
It’s a “gift while-holding-public-office”.
That’s the “problem”.
If Qatar wants to give private citizen Donald J Trump a flying palace, that’s fine. Which he’ll be 12:01PM, January 20, 2029, any time before that is clearly Constitutionally prohibited.

The US received a rare leopard as a gift are there any liberals worried Trump will make a personal pet out of it?
Did he indicate that he wouldn’t be using this aircraft, should it be sent to the USA?

Indeed, and to justify it he says it's for the government, but intends to place it in the Trump library at the end of his presidency (hopefully that will occur without hitches.)
How big is this “library“ gonna be?

Of course, he accepted it. Why wouldn't he? A man of moral principle is not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Trump.
Conversely, he’s such a saint, that getting a gift that is larger than several nations‘ GDP, won’t affect his judgement and could one day bomb Qatar if they “get out of line”.

Hillary Clinton Rips Trump Over Qatar Plane, Gets Slapped With Reminder of the Gifts She Accepted Do you think the Clinton’s used the approximately 30 million donated to their foundation?
“Clinton, ever the grizzled political veteran, had to know that critics' responses were going to come flying in fast and furious, even with the comments on her posts being turned off.

“And they most certainly did, many of which involved gentle reminders that Clinton was embroiled in countless pay-to-play donation controversies while serving as Secretary of State under President Barack Obama. Not to mention, while preparing to run for President.
One such gift came from - you guessed it - Qatar.

Reuters reported on a $1 million donation sent in 2011 by Qatari officials to the Clinton Foundation in honor of her husband's birthday. The Foundation was forced to confirm that it received the gift from Qatar "without informing the State Department," while Clinton was Secretary of State, after hacked emails published by Wikileaks years later revealed they wanted to meet Bill in person to hand him the check.

According to the same report, the Qatari government had donated up to $5 million to the foundation over the years, which were significant gifts to a former and, what many thought at the time, future President.

And it didn't stop with Qatar.
Beyond accepting the Qatar gift during her tenure with Obama's State Department, Clinton lifted the foundation's self-imposed ban on accepting foreign government donations as she ramped up to run for President in 2016.

They collected significant contributions from foreign governments like Saudi Arabia ($14.5 million), along with Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, all dropping between $1 and $5 million.

"All, of course, are Middle Eastern countries with poor human rights records," CNN reported at the time. "And poor records when it comes to women's rights." “

It belongs to the defense department not personally to Trump. Just a small fact you overlooked. But I am so glad you are trying to look out for our constitution.

So the new air force one will belong to not to the office of president but to Donald Trump. A bribe pure and simple.

He accepted a hostage release too. Should we have turned that gift down as well?

We got a deal with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria. This has the potential to be positive.

Let's accept the two gifts, an American hostage and a plane as a country that is happy to try and make some peace in the middle east if we are able, who are grateful for the overtures made by Qatar and Saudi Arabia toward that peace.

The gifts were the way they showed trustworthiness, and willingness to work alongside us as partners towards a more positive vision in the region.

I guess a few in the GOP still remember the old talking points.

GOP heavyweights join bipartisan bashing of Trump Qatar jet deal

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and GOP firebrand senators are among those voicing discomfort with the deal.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) noted Qatar’s financial support for militant group Hamas, a foe of Israel, and voiced concern about the security risks the plane could present.

I'm guessing the republican opposition we're seeing creep up on this would likely be non-opposition if it was any other country.

This is likely the result of getting some phone calls from their AIPAC handlers.

Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) has publicly asserted that "every Republican in Congress has an 'AIPAC babysitter'"

Oh? Why would the DOD donate a plane to the Trump library?
