  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don’t see how anyone can spin this into some kind of win for Trump. He started with his ridiculous tariffs on Chinese goods and China refused to even talk until the tariffs came back down. Maybe when they finally get to an actual agreement and we can see the details we can all it a win but until then this is just Trump backing down as he was told to by China.

Treasury Secretary Bessent appears to disagree with that opinion. There's more involved here than tariffs.
Mr. Bessent needs to make Donald happy and pretend there is a win.
Mr. He Lifeng of China does not see a done deal, just a temporary reduction in tariffs, and plans to continue talks. No specific date for those talks have been given.

Once there is a deal, we'll get specifics.

Trump and his team negotiated a good deal. Unfortunately, you appear to refuse to admit it or accept it.

What are the terms of this new deal and how do they improve upon what we had before Trump jacked up the tariffs?

What a silly take. These impacts don't happen instantaneously.

Read everything that's Treasury Secretary Bessent and his other top negotiators have said about this. That will answer your questions.

Can you point me to something specific? Because I watched his interview on CNBC and, unless I missed it, he didn't get into any specifics.

Trump and his team also negotiated a good deal during his first administration only to call it a horrible deal during his second administration.

What? There's been no deal yet. Trump said he'd drop his tariffs and China agreed to do the same. You're back where you started. He completely threw the global trade into confusion, prompted many countries to look elsewhere rather than rely on the US as a trading partner (because Trump has shown that he's not reliable), completely wrecked the supply chain and threw tariff figures around like he's in some diabolical auction (including tariffs on penguins) then folded like a cheap suit at the prospect of empty shelves and reverted back to the status quo.

In what alternative reality can that be described as 'a good deal'? From here: The US and China have reached a temporary truce in the trade wars, but more turbulence lies ahead

'For the US, this means ensuring there will be consumer goods on the shelves in time for Halloween and Christmas, albeit at inflated prices.'

So Suzy can have her one or two dolls after all. Her parents will just have to pay more.

I like the analysis in that article in the "Temporary truce" section of that opinion piece. Also, the deal and the 90 days pause of high tariffs between China and the USA gives Treasury Secretary Bessent and his team more time to negotiate for a better trade deal with China.

There. Is. No. Deal. And China aren't committing to fixed talks either. After the US asked China to meet and discuss matters: No matter how he spins it, this is a major capitulation from Trump

"The meeting is being held at the request of the US side," declared Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian. Trump tried to downplay the importance of who was the requester versus the requested.

"We can all play games — who made the first call, who didn't make them. Doesn't matter," Trump said.'

Actually it does. It tells us who folded first.

I don't know if Trump blinked. I think the proper word would be "caved" to what China wanted.
Trump sat at his desk and claimed China has been calling them.
China who was on total radio silence broke that silence and called that a lie. (who would have thought)
China also said nothing will happen till tariffs are backed offed, and then we can talk.
Trump et al announce an agreement to back of the tariffs and mechanisms for future talks.
In other words, exactly what China asked.

Actually any negotiation with China has to be done without China "losing face"
Instead of this being "Trump is willing to negotiate " it's "Trump folded "
Would you be more pleased with him if he refused to budge on tariffs over 100%?

Trump has been also obviously backing down for quite a time. First cancelling tariffs for some specific goods like electronics, then posting anxious demand for China to open trade "NOW!!", then saying things like "we will be nice to China, very nice" and then finally dropping the tariffs, because China did not call and stopped selling rare earths minerals to the US. Also, China replaced a lot of trade to the US with other countries, meanwhile.

The US have been blinking the whole time.

Yes, we all know Trump himself has no ego and is not about losing face.
Nothing happened till Trump et al reached out, and Trump et al did what China asked in the first place.
