I think it helpful to categorize our trading partners as either present allies or enemies.

For our enemies, your insight above is helpful, especially regarding materials needed for our defense.

Only those present allies that have the potential to defeat us in war need be in a third category, but I can't think of one.

We should encourage fair trade with our present allies that do not present a clear and present danger.
What we have is an extreme view from the left, like the post you answered. Trump talks a big tough for negotiations, it reminds me of how my wife haggled at the swap meet in El Paso. Or how I did at the used car lot when asked what kind of payments I wanted, I always replied $10 payments. No one knows what is negotiated between countries yet, and Carney said it best that it's a process, and he understands the USA's position. Now China is meeting in Switzerland with all its rhetoric. It's all talk! It takes compromise in every negotiation. The left hopes Trump fails because of the tribalism and party politics, and the right hopes Biden fails, but I hope he succeeds for all Americans. Sad that both sides don't recognise the good that both presidents is trying to do.

except it's more like, your kicked out of the swap meet for yelling at people for not taking your stuff they don't need so you can buy their stuff. Never been to one, but traded enough cards and such with others, they can refuse to trade with you if you don't have what they want, or will only trade 30$'s not 400$'s because you have more you want. You guys are basicly complaining that other countries won't buy more then they need/want. what is Canada supposed to do with 50 billion more dollars in stuff we don't want/need just to make you guys feel good about a trade? When I trade cards, I don't make the guy take more cards then he wants.

Kentucky bourbon exports at risk as Trump-Canada trade tensions escalate

Kentucky's bourbon industry faces potential devastation as President Donald Trump's latest tariff dispute with Canada threatens to halt $43 million in annual whiskey exports. During Tuesday's Oval Office meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump maintained his hard stance on tariffs, declaring that Canada would need to make significant concessions to see any relief.

Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-KY), chair of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus [isn't that any DC bar?], expressed concern about the meeting's outcomes in an interview with ABC News.

When asked about conditions for ending the tariffs, Trump indicated there were none, a stance McGarvey found particularly troubling.

"If you're using tariffs as a negotiating tactic, but then you say there's nothing you can do to get rid of it, that's going to be problematic," McGarvey noted.

The impact extends beyond just sales figures. Kentucky's bourbon industry supports over 22,500 jobs and contributes $9 billion annually to the state's economy. The ongoing trade dispute threatens this economic engine, with some distilleries already reporting decreased international orders and considering production cutbacks.

lets not pretend that it's just the tariffs, it's also trumps insane desire to threaten canada every few days with being part of the US, I mean carney even had to shut him down during the meeting.

Really, I don't think anyone is bold enough to kick us out of the swap meet, including China. No, educate yourself in the case of Japan, they have billions of dollars in trade surplus, and yet still tariff our goods. Japan isn't the only country that does the same. Which isn't fair to us. The countries below have and are negotiating, and Carney from Canada has spoken positively and is willing to work with the USA.

HEY that hurts...and is sorta true, least in my town after dark not much to do here :> Though in my town we have a ton to do during the day.

To be fair, I am only familiar with the Vancouver/Victoria area and the Toronto/Mississauga areas. I'm positive that there's plenty to do in Alberta and Saskatchewan as well.

yeah canada's goverment willing to work with the US but Canadians are not, and a trade deal still benefits, but I bet you when the dust settles it's going to be a net negative, the US has shown you can't be trusted to trade with, so most countries are going to trade elsewhere.

I would hope that the average Canadian knows that it's a certain politician and his unhinged rebranded party and not the country as a whole

yeah don't worry, we should go back to buying in about 3 1/2 years, but I frankly hope we don't go back to normal levels of selling to the US, nothing against all of you just some, but after covid/housing crisis and this it's pretty clear that while it's to our advantage, canada has our economy WAY to tied to yours and even small things going wrong can hurt.

"canada's goverment willing to work with the US but Canadians are not" <-- this part is definitely not wishful thinking

Regardless of where the tariffs land, Trump's actions have turned off Canadian consumers to US products and re-energized interest in local products.

Trump has effectively changed the buying habits of a nation, all to the detriment of US-made goods.

Well, no one can say that Trump didn't accomplish anything.

Sounds more like the cover name for a Wednesday night drinking club of Members of Congress. It could be held anywhere.

The United States imposed broad tariffs on imports of Canadian goods at the beginning of March before announcing several reductions and exemptions, while Canada hit back with counter measures.

As a result, Statistics Canada said, exports to the United States “were down significantly for the month,” about 6.6 percent.

That'll teach those beady-eyed head-flappers!

“But this decrease was almost entirely offset by a strong increase in exports to countries other than the United States,” the national statistical agency said, pointing to a 24.8-percent surge in shipments overseas.

The jump in exports to those other countries fueled the second-largest percentage increase on record, it added.

Wait, they can do that? Sell products to this alleged 'rest of the world' that supposedly exists?

According to Statistics Canada, total exports in March fell 0.2 percent mainly on lower prices, while total imports were down 1.5 percent.

As a result, Canada’s trade deficit went from Can$1.4 billion (US$1.0 billion) in February to Can$506 million (US$367 million) in March.

Trump says China tariffs will drop ‘substantially – but it won’t be zero’

The US president said that the final tariff rate with China would come down “substantially” from the current 145%.
“It won’t be that high, not going to be that high,” Trump said.
On China’s social media platform, Weibo, Trump’s remarks trended under various hashtags including “Trump admitted defeat”.

Ordinarily I'd suspect a fake, but he apparently hosts a right wing/libertarian Rumble broadcast.
I guess Reddit got onto him, and now he's having quite a day.
