  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Despite your misinformed views to the contrary, the church has been growing non-stop for 2000 years, includes a third of the planet in its membership, and shows no sign of slowing down.

Trump is trying to attach himself to the winning team.
There's many non Christian churches, that fit into your churches, have been growing beliefs. Actually Trump has made religious people look bad. Because religious people are stumbling all over him. And defending ever lie. That Trump, Trump's people and his favorite news media tells. Trump is using religious people. Because he can.

He is a sick man. No sense of what is appropriate. No emotional intelligence what so ever. This is not adult behavior.

That's what I thought, too. Deranged. Especially as he has a number of conservative Catholics working for him. Unless... he means this as some kind of loyalty test.

No non-Christian churches fit into the Church proper. How false religions grow and fall does not matter compared to the true church. It just defines the challenges of each age.

Right now, the appropriation of God's name for selfish causes, as in the case of Trump and Putin, is a threat to the church. Next, Islam is a considerable threat to the church, promoting terrorism (much of it against Christians). Then comes militant atheism of both liberal and communist kinds.

Trump can use religion because of his considerable personal worldliness and because of the way the church in the USA has defined its priorities. He only really cares about money and himself. The concessions he makes to religious people on abortion, Supreme Court justices, and the defence of Christians around the world are not things that matter to him, but which he knows secure Christian support. The bargain is this: He gets support for his economic agenda, and the church perceives it gets a president who protects the church and the unborn and someone also who wants world peace, albeit as a condition for American prosperity. It may seem like a bargain with the devil to people outside the church, and there is a considerable debate globally inside the church also as to whether it is, in fact, that. But narrowly defined American Christian objectives tend to ignore poverty, the dignity of the exile, the requirement of holy living (forgiveness is cheap after all), and stewardship of the environment. From this distorted view of the Gospel, Trump seems less like Nero and more like Cyrus.

I have better things to worry about. His actions or what he finds humorous are beyond my control. Whining on the internet about it while he lives rent free in peoples heads is also something I can’t control. He seems to be very talented at trolling though. *shrug*

Trump is meant to be the president of the United States, not an edgy 15 year old trolling people on the internet. . The fact that people dismiss this just proves to me that Trumpism is becoming more and more like a cult.

Whoa bro... Totally uncool thing to say!
No, Landon, this was a totally uncool thing to say.
As funny as that is to me personally,
Your reaction to Trump's post.

I am not a Christian. There is much I find wrong with the Catholic Church, but Pope Francis was a good man and Trump's obscene post was an insult to a good man, to millions of Catholics and should be seen as an affront to dignity by anyone with an ounce of compassion and decency.

Loyalty seem to be his number one priority. Who will defend him no matter what he says or does?
On a daily basis he does something toxic. That image as Pope I could easily dismiss, if he were not the President of the United States.

Nah. You thought it was funny.
Which is a strange take. I hardly think people associate an official in the Catholic Church with a sexual assaultist.

So? I found the sudden interest in the Church and its defense fascinating. You guys love this stuff. Enjoy!

It's whatever. I don't really care.
So nowhere then? Seems odd to make a claim when it’s so verifiably false.

On a wider level; should someone who identifies as Christian say falsehoods?

Nobody is defending Trump.
This is itself a defense of Trump.
People have priorities of what’s important and what’s not. This is not. The dramatics in this thread is hilarious though. :swoon:
What makes you say it’s unimportant that the President of the United States is taking time to publicly mock the spiritual leader of millions of faithful Catholics? I think that’s very important. If someone were to post a similar meme here on CF they’d rightly have their post taken down and receive a warning or staff action for being so disrespectful towards the Catholic members on this forum.

I think this flippant attitude towards this from professed Christians is even more shocking than the president’s actions. We already know he has no standards. I’m surprised you guys don’t seem to have any either.

Well, maybe not surprised.

No it’s a defense of people that are not making a mountain out of a molehill. I made myself clear how I felt about the stupid joke.

I did not see it as mocking but a riff on the upcoming conclave and Trump stretching out a joke he thought was amusing. I don’t see any mockery there. I see a stupid joke. As far as him posting on social media versus here, again, bad comparison.

There are more important things to get offended over than a bad joke from Trump. Take it as you will.

There's no mountain, it is just a stupid joke but the president isn't above criticism for making a stupid joke, right?

How is it a bad comparison? It would break the rules here because it is in poor taste and makes light of something that is very serious to a lot of people of faith. Maybe you're personally ok with that but in general, this isn't acceptable behavior from a rebellious teenager, much less from the President of the United States.

Why do you think it's ok for the President to act this way? Wouldn't you expect something more dignified than this?

Sure, that's what all the other threads are for but this one is interesting because of what it highlights in a lot of these Trump threads where there seems to be some inability by some, not necesarilly you, but some here to criticize Trump even for the most obvious things like this dumb joke here. No one is saying he should be impeached over this or anything like that but it's interestin to see Christians and even Catholics take this specific joke so lightly in such recent time since the passing of Pope Francis. I would think a venerated Christian leader such as him would deserve a little more respect than this.
