  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

House Bill 2436 would exempt law enforcement officers from being charged with deadly conduct for actions taken in the line of duty.

It's already passed the TX Senate and it's moving through the House. Supporters say police just can't do their jobs without being able to kill. Some critics say that it'll let police kill more. Other critics say that removing culpability for this specific crime will motivate prosecutors to charge them with more serious crimes.

Here's a story with bodycam footage of the case mentioned at the beginning of the article. Anybody with half a brain can look at that and see how the police could have handled that better.

I'd be all for this if one (or some) of the following changes were also made:

* Killing cops got lighter sentences
* Police Pension plans paid for all "unnecessary use of lethal force" litigation scenarios with mandated minimums.

There's no good reason why it should be made EASIER to kill anyone in the US.

I have been saying for a while settlement payouts should come from police pension funds. Covering for the bad apples would end overnight if it was their rather than taxpayers on the hook.

Got a citation for this?
did some research, its not quite that high, there are lengthy reports you can read that are hundreds of pages long.

that number came from a lengthy letter to the editor in our local newspaper from someone who offered a well reasoned rebuttal to the current movement of the time several years ago: "defund the police"

america is a violent country, and the vast majority of folks shot by cops.. well, they got what came to them.

so 999 out of a thousand violent interactions do not result in death.

do you think you have better de-escalation skills than that? Because ultimately that's what all these arguments need to come down to.

How are we defining "violent interactions"?

Bad cops need to be held accountable. IMO, there have been far too many cases of cops pulling the trigger rather than de-escalating....

Christopher Taylor, an on-duty officer, shot and killed DeSilva that night. DeSilva’s father has said his son was not a threat to the police, only to himself. Prosecutors agreed.

Taylor last year was sentenced to two years in a prison for deadly conduct, a charge only a handful of officers have been convicted of in recent history.
