  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mike Johnson Wants to “Return the Dignity of Work to Young Men”…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "work" that really matters is this type-
Jesus said- "The work God requires is to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:28)
"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philip 2:12 KJV)

Of course, if people feel hard work is their calling, there's nothing wrong with that as long as they don't overdo it.
For example my late dad was a chronic workaholic, ("That shoe factories my life") he once told my mother, and he ended up half-nutty with overwork.

At the other extreme monks feel their calling is to avoid the world and spend their lives in monasteries, nothing wrong with that either..:)

If someone is truly determined not to work, they will simply go without health insurance in the face of the government taking it away. No amount of torture will get them back in the workplace.

Young men don't need health insurance anyway. They are the segment of the population least likely to need medical care.

(Meanwhile, "looking for work" is already a requirement for unemployment and food stamps anyway, but the boys will just lie about their job search and go back to Donkey Kong. If you don't care, no amount of arm twisting will work.)

The USA has an unemployment rate of about 4 percent. That is quite low.

It will go up, we haven't finished firing all the woman and minorities.

Yes, but then you can deport the minorities and reclassify the "barefoot and pregnant" women as not counting as unemployed.

…while Trump and other Republicans simultaneously continue their assault on worker protections, firing people from their jobs willy-nilly, and seeking to make federal employment as miserable as they can.
If you read the full report Johnson must be overstating the number that are able and do not work. The 36 million losing coverage include those who can't manage the paperwork and other reasons, not just the ones who don't work. Many in medicaid coverage work already too. https://www.cbpp.org/research/healt...ut-36-million-people-at-risk-of-losing-health

I just assumed that from the outset.

The number that keeps coming up seems to be around seven million. Vance quoted such a number and I don't think the Left seriously contested it.

Here's some background on the $4.5 trillion tax cut for millionaires and mostly billionaires.

Johnson seems focused on "worthiness." Some young men might be grad students. There are lots of of them, many in medical fields, studying near us. Did you know you need doctorates to be a physical or occupational therapist, physician assistant, or audiologist (and while they will be well compensated, they won't approach MD salaries.) They don't have the time to work many hours.

Should we be investing in our future scientists and engineers--or give those billionaires $4.5 trillion in tax cuts?

And of course state universities have been funded less and less by the state governments, increasing tuition for these future scientists, teachers, nurses, engineers....

Declining State Funding for Higher Education

A major reason that has led to an increase in tuition is related to the lower support from the states towards their public universities and colleges. Traditionally, there had been significant allocations that went towards state coffers for them to keep costs down but now this does not happen anymore. Nonetheless, starting from 1980s with more emphasis being put after the global economic decline of 2008, there has been a gradual reduction in state funding for this sector. As a result of this development, universities have resorted to increasing the amount of money that they charge as fees so as to maintain their operations hence making learners’ parents bear much of the financial load. The Causes and Effects of Exponentially Increasing College Tuition Rates in the United States

Do you know why state universities are spending less and less on their universities? You got it! They want to give tax cuts to billionaires and millionaires.

A double whammy for young people starting out with burdensome student loans.

Are young people confident that their work is building a world they like rather than just destroying beauty to make rich people even richer?

That's really the crux of the issue that ideologues like Mike Johnson ignore. Simply dishing out work for work's sake is a kind of idolatry. Work neads to be meaningful and integrated into a holistic sense of human flourishing.
