  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bondi Suggests Signal Chat Episode Is Unlikely to Be Criminally Investigated

The attorney general said the focus should be on the success of the U.S. military strike in Yemen, not that military information was shared in advance in a group text among top officials.

Well there you go. As long as the mission strike went off without a hitch, no need to investigate any crimes that were committed.
That's fine, but they'd better fix the problem. Here is the thing: Anyone who is trying to break in has the encrypted transmission to work with. Now they know what the contents are and at least some of the recipients. That might well turn out to give them data to aide decrypting it.

This really ought to mean dumping that application completely, not just modifying user procedures.

I used to live on Bainbridge Island (rode the ferry with Russell Johnson a lot) but golly, I have loads of money but I'm only Michigan rich, I can’t afford Washington State now.

But seriously, are you serious? And would it be City of Seattle or King County? Not that I am looking, but you gotta keep opportunities open.

I was looking at Washington State Ferry as I was smart enough to get my Coast Guard licenses for mate and master.
It would be for the city and I can't guarantee anything. We go through a competitive hiring process which means you would have to meet the qualifications and get an interview, but having an internal sponsor carries a lot of weight. Another caveat, I'm retiring next year so...

I certainly hope they fix it in private. But the public stance of "move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for" is troubling.

I think the big issue here isn't the chat itself. Signal is an encrypted and authorized app. The real screw up is inviting someone to the chat who shouldn't have been. Someone really screwed that up. Now I have no idea if it was criminal or not because I don't know the laws surrounding this. I have a feeling none of you do either. And I also do not know the specific policy regarding using signal on a personal phone instead of a government phone. Is there a law against that or Is it a policy? Who sets the authorization for it?

Did the reporter break any laws regarding receiving the information and continuing to read it?

There is a lot here to break down. But I think we can all say with certainty that inviting the journalist to the chat was a major screw up by someone. And having an investigation as to who that would be is entirely appropriate and holding them accountable for it is also appropriate. Even if it was a mistake.

No. There is no law requiring persons who come across classified information that has been erroneously exposed to them to do anything particular with it. The laws address only those who have been authorized to handle classified information.

That was one of the early things we learned back in the 70s when issues like the Pentagon Papers were swirling. If we leaked or accidentally exposed classified information to a news reporter, that reporter is not under any kind of legal obligation to keep it mum. It's a First Amendment issue.

yeah I was wondering if it was poes law :>

It could be, but it’s also the official position of the talking heads that down play actions that would have me locked away if I had done something similar.

You know, Geraldo was removed from Iraq by the 101st Airborne for reveling less, but in true fashion, the same political side down played the breach and made excuses. It's good to know history repeats itself.

That's a basic misunderstanding of the technology. His CIA provided desktop computer was undoubtedly on a government system completely segregated from the Internet. I wouldn't expect him to know the deep details of the technology, but he should have known that much. And even if he didn't know that much of the technology, he should have known he was too ignorant of the technology to make presumptions about the technology.
Well that’s the thing, innit? The ignorant never know who they are!

Private Data and Passwords of Senior U.S. Security Officials Found Online

Donald Trump's most important security advisers used Signal to discuss an imminent military strike. Now, reporting by DER SPIEGEL has found that the contact data of some of those officials, including mobile phone numbers, is freely accessible on the internet.

To do so, the reporters used commercial people search engines along with hacked customer data that has been published on the web. Those affected by the leaks include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Most of these numbers and email addresses are apparently still in use, with some of them linked to profiles on social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn. They were used to create Dropbox accounts and profiles in apps that track running data. There are also WhatsApp profiles for the respective phone numbers and even Signal accounts in some cases.

National Intelligence Director Gabbard was seemingly more careful with her data than her two male colleagues. She apparently had her own data blocked in the commercial contact search engines that contained the data of Hegseth and Waltz. But her email address was to be found on WikiLeaks and Reddit.

Gabbard’s email address is available in more than 10 leaks. One of those also contains a partial telephone number, which, when completed, leads to an active WhatsApp account and a Signal profile.

To protect the private contact information of the U.S. politicians, DER SPIEGEL is not publishing the telephone numbers, email addresses and passwords it found. Furthermore, no tests were performed to determine if the passwords for the email addresses are still active. DER SPIEGEL informed Gabbard, Hegseth and Waltz of its findings.

I think we've established that Waltz is a leaker, and in bed with the Enemy of the People.
