  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You completely ignored everything I said. How did you manage to do that? Was it too confronting to address? Was keeping what you think is worthwhile and cutting what you don't at the same time too complex for you to consider? Are sacking people and then being told that they hold critical positions and trying to retire them seem like a good way to do business?

Wherever you work, the boss says he's going to bring in an efficiency expert to trim the fat. No problem, you think. You're a valuable member of staff. You just got promoted. But the guy says that the company will cease trading while he has a think about it. Got a mortgage to pay? Tough luck, your salary has been stopped. Got children to feed? Got bills to pay? Got a wife who needs expensive meds? Well, just tough luck, old boy. And hey, you just got the sack, because of that promotion you're in a probationary position. Oops. Come in on Monday and security will escort you to your desk for 10 minutes so you can collect your things.

Do you think that's the way to run things? Well, yeah. Actually it seems that you do. Welcome to your new world.
People are laid off and let go all the time in the private sector and I haven’t seen any of them on 60 Minutes or MSNBC

You're still avoiding my question. So I'll ask again: How is taking in illegals and giving them food, shelter clothing and other allowances exploiting them?
The question that had nothing to do with sanctuary cities? You are correct since it has nothing to do with the topic of discussion.

Then why did you even reply to me saying illegals were being taken advantage of and exploited? Okay then. Carry on.

Again, these things need to be properly investigated. Just because something appears to be legitimate on the surface doesn't mean it is. Clearly, enough waste and fraud has been uncovered to justify the total overhaul that's going on.

If they had jobs that were crucial to the nation or crucial for life giving aid and they'd been sacked literally at random then you might well see them.

If you've been paying attention at all you'd realize that the majority is actually being used on corruption and waste. Billions upon billions of dollars. But that's just if you're paying attention, which im sure you are.
DOGE released its findings already!? Huh

How do you manage to reply to a post and still ignore what was said completely. It's quite a skill.

I said that sanctuary cities are to stop CRIMINALS from taking advantage of people afraid to call the police. Good grief.

That they are illegal is obviously a given. But you do know that Trump has demonized them. It's not really up for debate. I mean they eat pets, for heaven's sake. They must do. Some guy said it on TV. He is appealing to those who really do think that immigration is 'poisoning the blood' of the US. I mean, you got to keep your bloodlines pure!

So he lied to you all. He lied when he said that countries are emptying their jails and their mental asylums. He lied when he said that they're murderers and rapists (although some, he assumes, are good people). He lied when he said he was going to go after the worst of the worst to start (forget the thread earlier of some mom and pop running a take away who have themselves been taken away). He lied when he said he'd deport them all (11 million?).

Why does he lie so much? Why does he need to do it? And why do so many people believe him?
I will grant, as I have said before, that he is given to hyperbole, and I agree that he has demonized them. (In fact, you may have heard me say that he sounds like drunk in the bar with his bravado and self-importance. On the other hand, I agree with him in that it is dangerous to let foreigners across the borders unvetted.

Also, sorry, but, they all lie. And many, maybe even most, of them every bit that much. "You know how to tell if a congressman is lying? Is his mouth moving?"

Bending over backwards that much can do you some harm.

No, they actually don't. They may do their damndest to hide the truth, but outright lying, with the obvious exception is, or at least used to be frowned upon. To the extent that it could get you expelled from your party. Misleading parliament is a very severe offence in the Westminster system. You shouldn't accept it as something normal.

Well, yeah, they do. Particularly to the public. They just don't get called on it. Take a look, for starters, at campaign promises.

And, I think, misrepresentation of the facts is the norm, even within the US Congress. Though you are right, HIDING THE TRUTH is the favorite.

Campaign promises are a different kettle of fish. Situations do actually change so that some promises, genuinely made, cannot be kept. But let's look at a recent direct lie, from here: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/23/politics/government-spending-elon-musk-doge/index.html

'When press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced at her first White House briefing that the Trump administration had spotted and thwarted a planned $50 million expenditure “to fund condoms in Gaza,” she attributed the supposed discovery in part to Musk’s DOGE team. Musk then promoted Leavitt’s words in a post on X, writing that this was the “tip of iceberg” and that he guessed “a lot of that money ended up in the pockets [of] Hamas, not actually condoms.”

But the claim was pure nonsense; Musk and the White House never had any evidence to substantiate it. Asked two weeks later about the inaccuracy, Musk made his concession that “some of the things that I say will be incorrect, and should be corrected.”

Musk then promptly continued to say incorrect things. Seizing on an inaccurate assertion from the reporter who asked him about the tale about condoms for Gaza, he criticized the US for supposedly sending $50 million in condoms to the African country of Mozambique — though that didn’t happen either.'

That's what I'm talking about. It was a direct lie to justify gutting USAID. If that had happened in Australia then Leavit and Musk would have lost their jobs. No doubt about that whatsoever. It would have been a huge embarrassment to the government. If the two people didn't resign they would have been sacked.

But in the US? This is par for the political course. Musk says 'some of the things that I say will be incorrect' which either means 'I can't be bothered to check' or 'I'll lie to you at times and it's up to you to catch me out'. Or, as he puts it 'I should be corrected.'

Nah, mate. That's not the way it should happen. You work for the government. You serve the people. You tell the truth to those people or you go.

I agree that you should tell the truth or you go, but it has yet to work out that way.

Are you saying you can find few such exaggerations and lies on the other side? Take a look at the Russia-collusion lie fed to the public year after year, and the resulting waste of money, time and public trust.

Right, go back 8 years to get the verification* that you are correct about this topic, about lies being told now.

Well, if it satisfies you, we could just go back to the democratic party covering up Biden's cognitive decline.

What is your point? Are you seriously going to sit there and tell me that the sudden and radical drop in illegal border crossings is Biden's doing?
The '90% drop' is compared to a year ago. It did not occur 'after Trump crackdown'.
