  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When I learned about the American political system I school one thing that intrigued Mr was the idea of "checks and balances" within your system. Seemed like a good idea to me at the time; thought it was strange canada only kind of had something look that but were were still technically under the brittish so we don't bother with little stails like that.

I was told that checks and balances were important because they help to fight against tyranny. But this was the canadian education system so.

Do Americans actually think checks and balances are important in government or not?

Yes. At least we used to.

I think it's important that the President checks Congress and the Courts to ensure the government runs smoothly.

The bureaucrats in the Executive Branch of the federal government work for the President of the United States. When resolved at the Supreme Court (if necessary), the current "checks and balances" battles between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches will give us more clarity on the President's power over his own employees, the work they do, and how they spend our tax dollars.

You are incorrectly assuming that we have a president who puts America first before the billionaire class. We don't.

If the Court has not been irremedially corrupted.

Checks and balances are under attack by a president who wants absolute power.
And Republican legislators are so spineless I can't help but think that the hundreds of boxes Trump absconded with in 2021 were filled with blackmailable dossiers.

It's built into our systems and we are watching the system work in real life. The actions between the Executive Branch - The Legislative Branch and the Judicial are the way the government work.

What we are witnessing, and what is causing all this consternation is that every President for the last 30 years has spoken about eliminating waste and over spending - and this one is not just talking about it, but acting on it.

The bureaucracy, run by unelected people have had a blank check so long and are so immersed in a system that in many ways has grown out of control - are fighting tooth and nail against change. There are politicians whose power base is directly connected to the flow of funds to these entities.

The moment money and power is diminished, people stress out over the actions. Lawsuits - accusations - etc. are the natural response. Where it gets 'muddy' is the over dramatic reactions.

But do we like checks and balances - yup, sure do. And we are watching it play out in real life.

Nice word, "irremedially". I had to look it up.

It did seem like that was the case during the judicial activism decades of the 1970's through the 2010's, but Trump fixed it in his first term, proving that it is possible to correct corrupt courts.

You forgot the president is breaking laws daily with his indiscriminate and vicious rampage.
That's not "checks and balances." That's a man whose immunity has perhaps made him megalomaniacal.

The Justices have been found to be accepting bribes. Unfortunately, Congress isn't willing to do anything about it.

IMHO - That is accurate only in your mind - because you literally make thousands of accusations and have never once provided references or proof of any of them. I don't live in a conspiracy world - but please - rage on - I hope every Democrat picks up on it and mirrors the accusations - it will help insure a Republican held White House for years to come.

No, they work FOR the American people at the DIRECTION of the president. the civil service is designed to be apolitical and should not be spoils awarded to loyalists.

Oh! OK. Checks and balances go in quotation marks now with Trump supporters.

That seems on brand. Why should Trump be checked right?

I'd argue that judges are not rules by Trump but by the constitution. Do I not understand that?

Not at all - During his first term the courts over ruled what the President wanted and he NEVER went against the courts. so you can take your quotes out.

Sure. Just accepting gifts from rich friends who directly benefit from your rulings.

But its not a bride because they didn't say "I'll send you on cruises if you rule this way for me". So let's turn off the Executive thinking parts of our brain and think the SC can be impartial on rulings like that.

Again if dems did this you would rightly be losing your minds.

You need another news source -

The same Judicial Ethics board who found no issue with Republican Justices and 'gifts', also found no issue with Democratic Justices and their 'gifts'.

There is a reality out there that speak differently

The mistake is you think I would have a partisan peoblem with this. I do not.

My last post explains why "there is no issue with this": no confirmation of a tit for tat.

supreme court justices should be not able to receive those sorts of gifts from people. Period. I mean why not at least keep up thr appearances of impartiality?

Is optics not even worth the effort?
