  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Looks like Democrats are. Me? Not so much.
Derp, I completely misread that as her warning that a vote for Kamala will turn the US into Detroit. Oh well. I'll leave it up.

"“All the best things were made in Detroit: Coney dogs, Faygo and Lizzo,” the pop star told the audience. “You know, they say if Kamala wins then the whole country will be like Detroit.”"

I sincerely hope she was just trying to be kitschy...

If not, that's an odd list of things she offered up a defense of her home turf lol.

The automotive assembly line, traffic signals, fiber optics, and the modern Hospital Bed evidently didn't make the list...

Greasy hotdogs and discount carbonated sugar water should probably rank on the "Best of Detroit" list somewhere between "Kid Rock" and "Leaded tap water"

I would counsel you to not take celebrity opinions too seriously. Except for Taylor Swift, of course.
"Lizzo" was stumping FOR Kamala Harris. She said her candidate will make the USA just like Detroit.

Which of those would be closer to the top of the list?

I guess it would depend on which already hurt worse that day, my kidneys or my ears

My thinking is that they both make you dumber; Kid Rock is just quicker about it.

I never understood why anyone cares about celebrity’s opinions about politics.

I think more and more, as certain industries/sectors are "politically captured", people look to members of those industries (who they may respect for other reasons) for their queues.

I don't think that it's any huge secret that the hip-hop & pop genres are comprised of people who mostly have a particular "leaning" (same goes for Hollywood actors)

Somewhere along the way, people stopped being "fans" and started becoming "followers".

When "I enjoy the stuff they make" turned into "I want to be exactly like them". That desire to imitate opened a door that political strategists have capitalized on.

Every once in a while, the stars align and the celebrity lending their voice to a certain cause actually has some expertise... For instance, Ashton Kutcher and his raising awareness for human trafficking (he actually runs an organization dedicated to fighting it, so it's more than just a 'cause du jour' for him)

This is obviously to counter what Trump said in Detroit, to Detroiters : "“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president.”
Considering that Detroit is greatly improved and has an excellent mayor who has straigthened the economy of Detroit, that is an insult. My family from Detroit were offended.

So LIzzo, a Detroit native, is standing up for Detroit in Detroit.

Greatly improved by what metrics, and compared to what? Itself 15 years ago?

It may have improved compared to what it was a decade ago...but after having been through there not 4 weeks ago, it still didn't look like the kind of place I would want to be wandering around at night...

They're still 2nd or 3rd in murder rate (depending on which ranking system you go with), and top 5 in burglaries, assaults, rapes, vehicle theft, and home invasions.

Maybe they should save the "Yay Detroit!" stuff until they're not neck-and-neck with Baltimore and St. Louis.

I never understood this affinity for defending a particular piece of territory just because it happens to be the closest major city to where one lives. The closest major city to me is Cleveland, and I'll be the first to tell you, avoid it if you can, and if you happen to be in East Cleveland after dark, don't stop for red lights or stop signs.

You won't find me saying "Cleveland is great, they have a Rock Hall and Nice Art museum, and the murder rate has dropped negligibly since 2015!"

I have never heard anything musically from Lizzo, but thanks to the Internet I have seen more than I ever wanted to of her.
I’ve never heard of, her I’m guessing, before this thread.

I'm not a fan of Lizzo, but I don't think Detroit is the worst city out there, as far as cities go... not even close. CityNerd on Youtube did a tour of Detroit and it looks like it's a decent city, with bike paths and some walkability. There's also alot of room for growth, and the downtown looks nice.
