• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Lately I've been troubled by fears that I have worshipped things other than God, or even people. A few times I have been thinking on my love for something or someone, and the thought turns to a sense, or feeling of worship, accompanied by a mental image of bowing down in worship to the person or object.
One time I purposefully summoned such thoughts/feelings toward something in an attempt to curb the fear, but that backfired and ended up being the instance that felt most legitimate, since I did it purposefully...

If it was just a matter of repenting, ceasing to make the person/object an idol, and moving on, then it wouldn't bother me nearly as much, but my main concern is that if I have worshipped something, then does that mean that I need to cut said object/person out of my life? In that case, I definitely need to figure out if these thoughts/feelings are truly idol worship.

I obviously deeply do not want to cut these things out of my life, but I want to be willing and ready to do God's will above temporal things.

I'm hoping someone here can give me some clarity on this, as it is really troubling me. Thank you

Thank you for sharing! I have scrupulosity as well, so I understand how you feel. I recently read this article... Idolatry Obsessions: Another Intersect Between Faith and OCD - Scrupulosity.com. Maybe it will be helpful for you. I have also found other articles on that blog to be helpful. Here is another resource that I have found encouraging... Mark DeJesus. If you look under his playlists, there is an entire playlist of videos about OCD. I hope you can find some encouragement from these!
