So was he really speaking of the difference between Carmelites and Franciscans or Hindus and Muslims?

He mentioned Hinduism and Islam by name in the controversial speech.

I would have assumed the idea that Carmelites and Franciscans are both paths to God would be uncontroversial in Roman Catholicism, since they are simply separate religious orders, but not actual denominations, let alone different religions.

It would be like an Orthodox suggesting that of the Hagiorite monasteries, Vatopedi is superior to Philotheou or vice versa.
