  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Her term ends pretty soon, but I'm sure she will be renominated. The question now being if the Senate would reconfirm her or try to drag it out since she's been fairly popular and it would give Biden a victory.

From the feel I get from the Republicans, they like her. Kudos to Biden for finding this diamond in the ruff. She is going after the big boys and a couple of billionaires are showing their displeasure. Seeing a smart young person is better than old geezers hogging up space.

More on Lina's work at the FTC

"Yes, it is true. That is only part of the story. There is more to it as to why the FTC is interfering. I am surprised there is not more information on Cerberus and Apollo Global involvement in the Kroger-Albertsons merger. $25 billion at play here. And both private equity guys are out to break the bank.

Kroger is already threating to go to SCOTUS because the FTC’s Lina M. Khan is getting in their way of making off with $billion. Hope you read it as this is the reality."

Edit: Added another article of the FTC's work.

I love how "fighting big tech" in America JUST means "presenting data that shows the impact of Big Tech".

You'd think data would be enough to convince elected officials of the problems.

You'd think so but our elected official might be playing pocket pool. Biden picked a diamond in the rough. I hate greed especially when it affects Americans including my kids and grandkids.

Here are a couple of Republicans coming after my girl Lina.
"(Bloomberg) -- Two senior congressional Republicans are targeting Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan for appearing publicly with House Democrats weeks before the November election."

Here is the reason why. Now I know why there is corporatism.

"Khan is a frequent target of congressional Republicans, who accuse her of being overly aggressive in enforcing antitrust laws. The FTC has received the Jordan and Lee letter, but has no comment, said spokeswoman Juliana Gruenwald Henderson."

I wonder how many of the 1% are whispering in their ears about her aggression?

"Jordan and Senator Mike Lee of Utah, in a letter to Khan on Monday announcing their joint inquiry, said her “campaign-style tour” raises the perception of breaching ethical standards. They didn’t provide any particular comments that Khan made nor cite specific violations."

Suppose she hasn't broken any laws and is winning cases that's all that matters not who she's seen with. I can't blame her for campaigning for her own job with the people who hired her.

"Khan-limbo: The FTC chair’s appearances on the road with Democrats come as her own future in Washington is in doubt. Khan’s term is up, and her hard-charging approach to the job seems to make the chances of a renomination slim no matter who holds the White House."

"Khan has been a lightning rod since landing at the commission in 2021.

During her tenure, the FTC sued Meta, Amazon and other giants. Lawsuit after lawsuit has made Khan a hero not just to progressives but also to some young populist conservatives (Me) fed up with corporate power – or “Khan-servatives.”

You always have critics you'd have to judge her actions yourself.

"Khan’s critics say she’s pursuing a vendetta against corporate America with fantastical interpretations of the law. Some who once supported her on Capitol Hill agree. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) told us he regretted his vote to confirm Khan.

“A thousand times no,” Wicker said when asked if he’d support Khan again. Multiple GOP senators expressed the same sentiment.

Elon Musk?

Yesterday, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and the richest man in the world, tweeted that Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Kahn “will be fired soon.”

"Musk is hardly the only billionaire upset by Kahn’s aggressive use of antitrust law to limit the power of big corporations — and, hence, to limit the power of billionaires like Musk.

Mark Cuban, the billionaire surrogate for the Harris campaign, has also said Kahn must go. So have major Democratic donors like Reid Hoffman and Barry Diller."

When a bipartisan group of billionaires agree that a government official who’s limiting their power must be fired, you have every reason to believe she’s doing her job."

I think the concerns that some people have espoused about Khan's aggressive push to limit tech companies use and consolidation of AI aren't all exclusively in the realm of "Rich guys complaining because they may lose a little power and profit opportunity".

While, as a general principle, I can see why some people want to limit a solitary company's ability to leverage it as an "enterprise" (IE: a way to drive more business to themselves in ways that makes it harder for new entrants to find their way into the market)

...what "sounds good in principle" also needs to be balanced against the liabilities and pragmatism in understanding that we're not the only country on the planet and limiting our national corporations in ways that other nations (that aren't far behind us) certainly won't, isn't a good thing for us.

Hypothetically (if our companies were broken up as to prevent consolidation of AI capabilities), in 5-10 years, is anyone going to be saying "Hey, even though Russia and the CCP are controlling 85% of the AI market share and stealing all our data...at least Chrome and Android phones aren't unfairly driving search engines towards their own product offerings as much anymore."

Lina Khan’s FTC went after Big Tech. Trump could dial that back.

The Biden administration’s antitrust warrior has some populist GOP support, but the new president appears more focused on curbing regulations than corporate power.

Lina Khan has been hailed by liberal Democrats and even some Republicans as a historic change agent as chair of the Federal Trade Commission, laying out a far-reaching doctrine for checking corporate power and calling out some of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies as alleged monopolists.

Some conservatives in Trump’s orbit have been supportive of Khan’s work against Big Tech, most notably Vice President-elect JD Vance. In February, he said Khan was “one of the few people in the Biden administration” that was “doing a pretty good job.”

President-elect Donald Trump appears to have a very different agenda. He has pledged to dramatically pare back the federal government’s reach, including by curbing what he called the “regulatory onslaught” from independent agencies like the FTC.

Trump has railed against agencies like the FTC acting like a “fourth branch of government, issuing rules and edicts all by themselves.”

Neil Chilson, who was acting chief technologist at the FTC during Trump’s first term, called [Kahn's antimonopolist] stance “radical” and said the agency would probably take a less adversarial posture toward deals in the tech sector under the next Trump administration.

“A Trump FTC will be interested in winning, not just making political statements” or setting new legal precedents, Chilson said.

Yep, and I'll speak out against it but JD might have a conversation with Trump because he supports her. I'll just hide and watch and be [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ed off if she's fired.
