  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you read the Bible?

A lot of times I’ll just flip to a random page & start reading.

Also I like to read what we covered in church. I read the whole chapter, sometimes chapters around it too. I learned this habit because growing up I went to a church that would just pick a verse or 2 at time, & I’d want more, so I’d read the Bible for myself, I found they were preaching it out of context & leaving parts out. I think this is also a good habit because it focuses on what you learned on Sunday, it’s not just hearing it for an hour on Sunday, you’re dwelling on it & studying it, trying to learn it, making it your life.

What? You found that by reading the text for yourself, you found something for yourself?? I'm shocked, I say, shocked! Ha!, I'm just being silly. I think your idea of reading all around the text is fantastic!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Best wishes,

KT

I'd like to hear from others how they read the Bible. I'm not talking about how one interprets etc, but how you get the information into your head.

I'll start. I use this app: Download The Bible App Now - 100% Free and I LISTEN to the Bible. I will put it on when I am in the shower in the morning, or when I am out working in my shop. There are many passages in the Bible that if I were turning pages in a book, I would want to skip past them. But because I am listening, that is less of an option. I find that I can get through much more of the Bible this way. And I think I process it differently in my head. Also, I start at the beginning (Genesis) and listen all the way through to the end. Because the OT is so long, sometimes I listen to the NT twice before starting over again in Genesis. In the app, there are multiple versions, and I like to listen to different versions each time.

How about you all? What do you do for reading? How long do you read? Do you go topically or linearly?

Best wishes,

KT

Hi Kevin,

This is a good topic. I have been reading the 'Today in the Word' from Moody Bible Institute for morning devotionals. It is really an enjoyable study time. Each month a different person on staff at the school will lead a study. It's a keeper!

Thanks for this. So does that go through a particular topic? Or does it work through a particular book of the Bible etc.

Thanks again

Hi Kevin,

I am ultra-late in responding to your response. Normally a topic or a particular subject is covered on a daily basis. This month-September is led by Dr. Russell Meek. He is the Old Testament professor at Moody. We are covering the book of Ecclesiastes. I have never been involved in a study on this particular book. It is an interesting way of looking at life.

Not late, just right on time. :)

So are you involved in the Dr. Meek directly? Or just following along a program he put together? Thanks for the reply.

if its your first time reading bible i would recommend starting from new testament john, than mathew, mark and luke, and than book of acts. A lot of pastors and evangelists recommend it. Also i would ask holy spirit to give you wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, and revelation while reading the bible cause the holy spirit is the teacher.

I do not know Dr. Meek personally. He is in charge of daily devotionals for the month of September. Next month a different professor will present the monthly daily devotional. Last month was my favorite. It was on the book of Job by Dr. Eric Moore.
