  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

CV NEWS FEED // The International Judo Federation (IJF) recently notified one of its athletes that he has been suspended from competing for the next five months due to the fact that he visibly made the Sign of the Cross on multiple occasions at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Serbian judo world champion Nemanja Majdov, an Orthodox Christian, was told by the sport’s governing body that “he has been banned from competing until early next year,” the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

The IJF decided to suspend Majdov partly because he had “shown a clear religious sign when entering the field of play” while competing at the Olympics on July 31, the Mailnoted.

The IJF deemed the athlete’s gesture of devotion a “violation of competition protocol regarding the display of religious beliefs,” theOrthodox Times reported this week:

Yep, the 2024 Olympics is officially woke.

I might add this to my Spiritual Warfare devotional.

"partly for"?

And why is it so hard to find the "other parts"? Because, for some reason, Christians are willing to lie and misrepresent to give the appearance of persecution....and it is a SHAME that people fall for this.

That "partly for" should have led you on a path to find what the other reasons were? And, sadly, all the typical right wing sources are hopping on this (as google indicates) and none that I saw explained the "other parts".

What were they? He did NOT follow the other very typical and rigid rules that are a part of martial arts: Specifically he did not bow after the match and took off his gi before he left the mat. BIG no nos in that sport.

Not only that but apparently, if you read the ACTUAL decision, the IJF acknowledge that his gesture was subtle and discrete.

Before anyone continues to comment on this please read the decision.

It is not advantageous for Christians to believe persecution when none has taken place. There is VERY REAL persecution happenning; this ain't it.

Yeah, but shouldn't the Olympics allow for freedom of speech? But yes, one must bow before the match, and follow match etiquette. So, he should have been given a warning, and maybe a temporary ban from the sport until he followed the rules. But, a sign of the cross is okay.

You're right, NO persecution has taken place.

In fact, even Jesus tells DON'T make public displays of your faith.

Matthew 6:1
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Continued until verse 6.

We get so many news of "Christian persecution" when they prayed in public or when they sang too loud in their homes and neighbors heard them..... Ironically, Jesus also said don't do it.

Read rhe report. It's considered his least punished infraction.

I will assume that you don't know the intricacies of international judo regulations when I say, perhaps we would be out of our depth Commenting on what an appropriate punishment is.

Yeah, I do not know the Judo regulations. Darn, I deleted the Olympics rules off of the AI a few days ago including the Judo rules, to save space on my computer. The rules are on an external SSD, but it would take over a day for the AI to learn all the rules for all these sports. If I did not delete the rules, I could have asked the AI to work out an appropriate punishment, or explain the rules.

Asides from the setting of the equestrian and my villages rowing club winning the women's rowing for Team GB then it was a shameful Olympics. That opening ceremony was disgraceful.
Agreed. I made a whole thread about how the Opening Ceremony was demonic. Congrats on your town for making it to the Olympics regardless though.

Yeah was really good to see, it's nice that athletes who are not overpaid celebrities get some great exposure but seems this weird woke culture is getting into every level of society. I'm very concerned.
I am concerned also, and I have to release a devotional about how our society has gone degenerate. The Bible predicts this.

Why would a sports playing field be a place to exercise freedom of speech?
Freedom of speech could get one kicked off an NBA court or an NFL field.

I grew up, "If you don't like the rules don't participate" and there is a time, place, and system to work in/with to attempt to change rules. It's not during the game.

Ooh, I do see your point. :) For instance, if a player cussed out another player, that should not be allowed. So yes, your point is valid.

Or if a player gets into it with a referee over the referee's decision.

Agreed. Players should never debate a ref. Ahh, that reminds me of something, where Bugs Bunny debated the umpire about whether he was out or not, which I probably watched 12-15 years ago. That is improper sports etiquette.

Baseball Bugs (the quality is bad, cos someone recorded his/her TV, duration = 30 seconds):

To be fair, in many Orthodox countries, their faith and public life were completely intertwined. There was no separation.

It’s a huge part of their identity.

I have no idea why people are offended at the sign of the cross. However, the guy did not perform the proper match bowing and stuff. But, yes, it does seem like a lot of people are sadly offended by Christianity in 2024.

How would they react if someone was flamboyant or wearing pride gear?

Hypocrisy to the core.
