  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The point being is that you can't criticise a proposal because congress may veto it.

Sure I can. If a proposal has very little chance of being passed, it's nothing more than an empty campaign promise.

"Free ponies for everyone if I'm elected!"

It's a simple plan to 'promote homeownership with tax incentives and support for first-time buyers'. Assuming that it would be done via taxes rather than a direct payment.

Why are you assuming that? Again, none of us has any idea what this plan looks like, because Harris hasn't divulged ANY of the details of this plan.

Do you really think this is going to be geared to young professionals in an upper tax bracket?

I have no idea, and neither do you, because Harris hasn't divulged ANY of the details of this plan.

That's why it has to be coupled with the building of additional houses. As I said, it won't work unless that happens as well.

Are you even a little bit curious what she meant when she said that private sector house builders would "partner" with the government?

The idea is to balance supply and demand so that doesn't happen. Build a million houses and give a million families the financial opportunity to buy them.

Free money for everyone! No impact on the economy at all! Whee!

No, they will be looking to buy. But they will determine which house to buy. They won't won't be signing papers on a house that costs $25k more than the one next door.

Why do you keep pretending there will be a house that is $25k more "next door"?

And, as I said, this is a limited market. It's low cost housing for first time buyers. It'll have no effect on more expensive houses.

Again, you have no idea if that's true or not. You're just saying things. Harris is the only one that could clear this up by actually telling us the specifics of this plan. That's why I posted the transcript from her interview response. Instead of giving specifics, she just rambled on about her mother, and her childhood, and her second mother, and construction workers, and her neighbors who were quite proud of their lawns, and small business owners that she's known. What was missing was any substance.

I guess the main difference here is that you seem willing to just blindly assume that Harris has it all figured out. I want details.

Well the quote I gave was from the Republican proposals. See here: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/08/16/business/harris-housing-plan/index.html. There's a link to the Republican proposals and you'll have less detail than Harris gives. Do you support their plans?

And let's face it, there are a shed load of proposals on their platform with zero details. And I mean zero.
Are you even a little bit curious what she meant when she said that private sector house builders would "partner" with the government?
Release land on which to build houses and tax breaks for the builders.
Why do you keep pretending there will be a house that is $25k more "next door"?
Because this is what you are saying. That people will raise prices to match the money granted to first time buyers. If I have a house next to yours that I want to sell, then I'll have more chance to sell mine if you put up your price by $25k. Prices would only rise if the sellers dictate the price.
Again, you have no idea if that's true or not. You're just saying things. Harris is the only one that could clear this up by actually telling us the specifics of this plan. That's why I posted the transcript from her interview response. Instead of giving specifics...

I want details.
I'll tell you what. You dig up the details of the Republican plan for doing pretty much the same - as I noted in the last post. And incidentally, I'll be surprised if more than 10% of Trump supporters even knew he had a plan. He's never even talked about it at all. And when you've done that we'll compare them with what Harris has told us about hers.

While you're looking up Trump's details for housing, let's do a direct comparison. Trump did a 'town hall' meeting in Flint, Michigan yesterday. And he took questions. And a local worker asked him:

'What will you do to eliminate those threats, sir (to Flint car manufacturing)?'

Now the answer is a little on the long side. I can't apologise for that because it's Trump that takes literally 10 minutes to give a quick heads up what he's going to do for Flint. You'll note that he starts talking about nuclear war, which I guess might be a threat to Flint. Then how three dictators are people he really gets on with. Then on to global warming - which of course is not a problem as far as he's concerned, then covid (which didn't come from France, apparently), then...well, trying to precis the whole thing is beyond me. So just read it. Then tell me that it couldn't be described as the very essence of a rambling response. Then see if you can pick out what details there were in help for Flint and let me know what they were. You can quote from his answer if that would help.

"Okay so I'll get into another little bit of a long answer because when you say major threat to me we have one really major threat that's called nuclear weapons. We call we have other countries that are hostile to us, they don't have to be hostile to us I always say if you have a smart president you'll never have a problem with China, Russia any of them okay.

I got along great with Putin, I got along great with President XI I got along great with Kim Jong-un of North Korea everybody said oh you can't get along with him. He liked me, I got along great with him and he has a lot of nuclear force but you essentially have five countries and you're going to have more whether you like it or not you're going to have more it's the single biggest threat to the world not only Michigan - to the world and uh you're not going to care so much about making cars if that stuff starts happening and we have people that are not good at negotiation the war, should have never happened uh President Biden...

I want to be nice, he was so nice to me yesterday, but you know in one way I sort of wish the call wasn't made because I do feel he's so so nice I'm so sorry about what happened and all that but I have to lay it out. We have very important and the same with Kamla today she could not have been nicer but the fact is the fact is we have to have people that are respected by the opponent by The Other Side, by other countries that have this even Pakistan has nuclear we have we have countries, India has a lot of nuclear force, we have countries that have tremendous nuclear power.

And when I hear these people talking about global warming that's the global warming you have to worry about not that the ocean's going to rise in 400 years an eighth of an inch and you'll have more seafront property right, if that happen I said is that good or bad I said isn't that good thing if I have a little property on the ocean I have a little bit more property I have a little bit more ocean but the fact is that um it's it's a tremendous problem and we are closer to World War III today than we've ever been and the difference is and I say this a lot, this isn't army tanks going back and forth and shooting at each other this is obliteration, the power of these weapons and I'm the one that revived it and I hated to do it but you know we had stuff that was 48 years old they didn't even know if it worked we have incredible stuff so does Russia China has much less but they're going to catch up over four or five years it's the single biggest threat by far to civilization and nobody talks about it.

They talk about global warming, used to be, remember, used to be global warming you know they changed the name. You know why? Because the planet's getting cooler now so now what they call it is climate change. That covers everything see, climate change if it gets...it's hot, cooled you know...these people I...I don't know if they're for real but if they're not they're covered by the words climate change. If it gets cooler that's good, if it gets hotter that's good, global warming wasn't working so well but the single biggest threat.

Okay now let's assume we have a really smart president and that's not going to be a threat because we have a lot of power. Doing business with China is a good thing but you have to have a fair deal doing business with Russia, they have so much in terms of minerals and things, the size of their land mass is like four times bigger than the United States, the minerals and things they have we can do great business and you keep everybody happy you can solve that problem. But let's talk about the local problem. The local problem is that you have countries stealing your business.

Mexico is a very big one Mexico this year we have a deficit with Mexico of $250 billion think of this with Mexico. Little Mexico you think of it as a little innocent place we're losing our ass to Mexico. China you don't even have to talk about, we have over a trillion dollars this year. I was charging them numbers that were unbelievable and now he's just totally given up the ghost and we're going to lose a trillion dollars in deficits to China. A trillion. That's not sustainable, we're going to turn it all around and we're going to do it through taxation and tariffs it will be done in 24 hours and it'll change the whole planet.

Just so you know Sarah, China became powerful because they charged... they don't call them tariffs, they call it a tax they call it, they don't call it tariffs. The word tariff is a beautiful word to me but to a lot of people that don't understand it's not a beautiful word because you have a lot of people that are paid for destroying the United States. They want millions of dollars in fees and consultation but we will in literally in a period of 24 hours we can change the whole trading of the whole world. They've taken advantage of our country for years. I stopped it. I stopped so much of it.

And then we had a focus on Covid which a lot of people said was put in there for a reason. You know it came out of the Wuhan lab which I said right from the beginning all of you know it didn't come out of a cave. They said a cave. It didn't come from France. They blame France. They blame, they blame...I call it the China virus cuz I like to be accurate you know. They call it, they call it the Spanish Flu. They call it all different names when something comes from a country except for China. We have to call it covid. What the hell does Covid mean? The China virus and a lot of people think they did that because they were not happy with me as president. I actually had a great relationship with President Xi and in his own way he probably liked me the most but maybe and maybe not. I saw that Putin the other day endorsed Kamala and you have to understand these are major chess players so when he endorses Kamala he may say well I did that because I love you and it's better to be doing it, so who knows but he...which is a little unusual I was watching you, I said that's interesting I think that's a good thing isn't it? It really is.

But look we have to turn it around, if we can we're going to have a reciprocal trade tax we're going to have a...so if China charges 152% which they do in a car if we sell a car made here into China which you don't do because the taxes too high they say to all your companies and to others and to Elon Musk who gave us...he is a great guy, he gave me the strongest endorsement and he's a really wonderful guy, but they say to him we don't want your car unless you build your plant in China and there's nothing wrong with saying that. That's smart. People say that we haven't said it for many years. I said it, we have a lot of plants going up with Apple and other things. I said you, you got to build plants. You don't build PL here we're going to put the tariffs on your products coming in from China so we can do it quickly. But we're going to have what's called the reciprocal trade act.

Now I dealt with a senator, a very good Senator actually, but he knows nothing about trade. I said here's what I want to do Senator. I want to take the reciprocal trade, if they charge us 100% we charge them 100%. He said you mean they charge us, we charge them? You got me how simple could it be. It was sort of cool cuz he doesn't care - he's a senator. Doesn't care about trade. But you know, so we're going to call it the Trump reciprocal trade act or I'll leave the name Trump off as long as we do it so when India, which is a very big abuser - he happens to be coming to meet me next week and he's fantastic, I mean fantastic man, these...a lot of these leaders are fantastic. You have to understand one thing, they're dealing, they're 100%. These people are the sharpest people, they're not a little bit backward, they’re not...they are at the top, you know the expression they're at the top of their game and they use it against us. But India's very tough, Brazil's very tough there are certain countries - I can tell you, everyone I can give you from top to bottom. China is the toughest of all but we were taking care of China with the tariffs so we're going to do a reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents if they charge us $2. If they charge us 100%, we charge them the same thing and you know what's going to happen. Everything's going to disappear and we're going to end up having free trading again and if it doesn't disappear we're going to take in a lot of money okay? But you know the biggest beneficiary I believe is going to be your state and I won't say that to other states, I promise about your state. You are going to have plants built at a level that you haven't seen in 50 years. Great question.'

That's not correct. His meandering speech patterns have been talked about quite a bit.

Regarding whether or not he's "succinct," is there some measure of "succinctness" we can use? Read this:

...and tell me he isn't go all over the place. It isn't until they get to questions about JD Vance halfway through the interview that he doesn't go off on a wild tangent within a couple seconds.

You don't seem to know the definition of objective. All you didn't was give me a transcript and your opinion.

Harris' preface may have been a bit long-winded, but when she finally got to the point, the whole thing came together and it became clear what she was doing.

That's the problem. Her answers are long winded and not to the point. That's a problem for many Americans.

And you managed to get through the speech by Trump a few posts above? Maybe you could comment in the thread that was started for that purpose. Link in post 86.

You don't seem to know the definition of objective. All you didn't was give me a transcript and your opinion.
The number/percentage of questions on which he drifted off-topic is quantifiable and objective. And is is greater in this interview than is was in the Harris interview in the OP.

I have no idea why you think this is relevant. I'm very aware that Trump is a bloviator. But what you don't seem willing to admit is so is Harris. Both of them ramble on, saying many, many words, without ever answering questions asked of them. All politicians do this to some degree, but these two candidates take it to new levels.

I'll tell you what. You dig up the details of the Republican plan for doing pretty much the same

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about. Can you point me to where Republicans are proposing that they'll give down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers?

Here's the interview with 6 Philadelphia. 11 minutes. Judge for yourself instead of listening to biased spin doctors.
She was articulate and consistent.
If that is the measure or articulate and consistent, the Trump is one of the greatest orators in our lifetime!

There is only so much bather that can happen in 11 min. Count her bathers, multiply them by 9, then compare in the thread noted in post 86

I've watched the Harris interview twice and read the transcript. It was only in her response to the first question that the started with a long-winded intro that sounded off-topic at first, but ultimately came back around after about 2.5 minutes. Every subsequent question was answered with something obviously on-topic.

Trump's one rambling answer in that other thread took nearly as long as Harris entire interview. 2.5 minutes out of Harris' 11 minute interview is roughly 23% of her time. Trump's 9 minutes rambling out of an hour-long interview is 15% of the total time, but that was just on one question. To the opening question of "why do you want to be president", he responded with another roughly 3 minutes of rambling, which is another 5% of his total time. So that's 20% of the total. From about 25:30 to about 32:00, he veers off of trade to ramble on about a litany of things including covid, nuclear weapons, and Afghanistan (most of the stuff he would bring up again a few minutes later in the response quoted in that other thread). That's 6.5 minutes, or another 11% of the time. Now we're up to 31% and I've only gotten up to the question he fielded from the audience (I believe, but am not positive, it was the only one he fielded from the audience), which was about half-way through. Should I go through the rest is that enough to demonstrate that he out-rambled Kamala by a significant margin?

Does that mean you are not voting for him?

Reality, neither is good at public speaking.

He rambles and she repeats.

I have no idea why you think this is relevant. I'm very aware that Trump is a bloviator. But what you don't seem willing to admit is so is Harris. Both of them ramble on, saying many, many words, without ever answering questions asked of them.
Harris spoke for about three minutes and gave two examples of what she intended to do. Trump spoke for ten minutes and said nothing that would help the guy who asked the question.

You have no idea why it's relevant? Because people pointing out supposed problems with one candidate completely ignore the very problem they are raising in the candidate who they are supporting. To a much, much greater extent. The Daily Wire which wrote the original piece is being hypocritical. If they wanted to do a piece on 'bloviating' and rambling responses, then it's hardly a balanced piece without even mentioning Trump.

It's a political hit piece. As if that really needed to be pointed out. Now how about you head over to the other thread and do a comparison on the two answers each candidate gave? One is a typical politician's answer. The other is a rambling incoherent mess. But you decide which is which.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but Trump being a rambler and a bloviator does not preclude Harris from being a rambler and a bloviator.

You seem wholly incapable of judging Harris on her own merits without comparing her to Trump. I have no idea why.

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about. Can you point me to where Republicans are proposing that they'll give down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers?
Didn't know about their housing plan? I'm not really surprised. Trump has never mentioned it in all the comments I've seen him make. Maybe he doesn't know about it either. Here's a quote from the link I gave earlier:

“The level of detail in the housing plan actually exceeds what you would normally expect from a campaign and is significantly more detailed than the Republican Party platform,” Dworkin said.'

There's a link to their platform there for you. And you say Harris is low in detail? Gimme a break...
