  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Harris vs Trump on Ukraine

Who has a better peace plan?
I am honestly not sure at this moment. If we want a peace plan, we must let Russia and Ukraine decide on making a peace plan, maybe with a neutral country that has no ties to Russia or Ukraine as arbiter. Maybe New Zealand can be arbiter, as those folks seem pretty isolated from the globe. America needs to focus more on its own issues, instead of getting involved in foreign affairs as much.

Hey, I am not a politician or ambassador though, except maybe an ambassador for Christ.

They don't need a peace plan. They need to either support one side or the other, or neither side.

Harris supports Ukriane.

Trump hasn't said who he supports, but based on past actions he supports Putin.

The U.S. belongs to NATO, and, as someone who respects our treaties with our allies, Harris will continue to stand against Russian aggression.
Similarly, we have treaties with Israel, and she continues to support Israel while tirelessly working for a cease fire. I am sure that knowing how Netanyahu is using our aid has given her many sleepless nights.
Trump's plan, to support giving Russia part of Ukraine as the first step in its plan to March into Europe, is totally unacceptable.
If we reward Russia for invading Ukraine, they will continue.
I sympathize with Harris. I am sure she would like to cut off weapons assistance to Israel, but she honors our treaties.

I like NATO.

But why do we need to keep expanding it along Russia’s border?
Seems a little aggressive.

Maybe better to expand it in South America or Africa?

NA stands for North Atlantic.
Ukraine has not been admitted, but all the other former Soviet bloc members recognize how strongly their fates are tied to Ukraine.
Finland was recently admitted.
In addition, Ukraine supplied most of Europe with oil and food and the war has raised their commodity prices and hurt their economies.

Neither candidate has articulated a 'peace plan'.

Trump has handwaved the problem away, with vague promises that he'd somehow magically end the conflict either within a day or before he becomes president through 'phone calls'. Most of the solutions proposed by Mr Trump appear to revolve around giving Russia the territory it has already conquered, cutting off military aid to Ukraine and converting financial aid into a bank-style loan.

Harris has committed to stand with Ukraine for the duration of the conflict, provide additional military aid and retain US leadership in the international community that is committed to opposing Russian agression.

I like NATO.

But why do we need to keep expanding it along Russia’s border?
Seems a little aggressive.

Because the countries on Russia's borders approached NATO for membership. It seems they think they need membership in a multilateral security alliance. I wonder why that could be?

Maybe better to expand it in South America or Africa?

Well, NATO is part of the North Atlantic. Maybe we could set up a NATO base on Greenland, as that island is nearly an equal distance from North American continent and the European mainland.

What about Ireland? Ireland could join NATO, but I am not Irish, and do not know enough about Irish history to answer why it is not part of NATO. If there are any Irish folks here that can explain Irish neutrality better, please chime in. :)

Ireland enjoys being neutral:

Wow, that is pretty cool. Someone's got to make a James Bond movie there, cos having a Space Force base there is pretty badass. :) And, as Greenland is owned by Denmark, a NATO country, technically, this base was jointly owned NATO property back then in the mid-20th century from what I can understand from the article.

From the article, this is the Thule Air Base in 1989

Peace means ending the war .... Harris has no intention of any kind of compromise ... so no peace plan there.

Trump hasn't stated exactly how he would end the war, just that he will.

Harris' position is the same as Pres. Biden and the other leaders of NATO: Russia will have peace when it leaves Ukraine.
Trump hasn't stated exactly how he would end the war, just that he will.
An empty promise.

As it should be. They invaded a sovereign nation and are occupying perhaps 20% if it.

Is "compromise" giving the invaders the 20%? Rewarding them for their violence?

If you were robbed of your property how would you feel if the courts let the criminal keep 20%?

Russia has had a Navy base in Crimea since the 1700s.

Does Russia own the Navy base in Crimea?
