  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Judge delays Trump hush money sentencing until after election

Oh they do? When did they inform you of this?
I'm not sure of exactly when, but I was informed though news articles and numerous forms of social media platforms. You're kinda acting like you don't know how that works.

No, I'm kind of acting like I don't find your conclusions credible. I've seen a few to many people on this board jump to conclusions that are not warranted by the data at their disposal.

Hey, I just simply answered your question. Which was obviously a mistake.

If you are expecting uncritical acceptance of your claims then responding to me would likely be a mistake.
Good grief. You seem to thrive on contention. Lots of people think the hush money case against Trump is a crock. Which you know perfectly well. Stop looking for a fight.

Many people do think that. Those who prosecuted it do not seem to think it a crock. This is the debate section. If you make a claim I find unlikely to be correct I am going to debate it.

No, why do you think that? If there is prison time imposed now it could be seen as election interference and generate a huge stink.

Why in the world do you think Judge Merchan would let Donald off the hook? He was found guilty on 34 felony counts and 10 or so counts of contempt of court, which was contempt for this judge, his clerk and the US justice system. The judge won't, probably, throw the book at him, but he'll likely strike a fair balance as he has so far.
Think about it. What would be the worst outcome possible for the democrats? Answer... for the judge to rule a month before the election that the case must be dismissed due to violating the Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. The easiest way to avoid that is to delay the announcement until after the election when it wouldn't matter.

And why would the judge all of a sudden have any qualms about Trump supporters being up in arms about election interference? The whole trial was/is election interference from concept to end. But Trump will walk free in the end because unethical democrats do not get the final say.

Why is Trump not only going along with, but specifically requesting this course of action? Does he just not see that it is, according to you, detrimental to his election?
Because he knows that it will include jail time and that would help him get reelected president? That makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

The Supreme Court ruled that any action taken as president of the US was immune. The NY State charges were for actions he undertook as a candidate which does not have immunity.

If Trump were to be sentenced so close to the election, it would surely be appealed on that ground and lead to more delays whereas if he waits, he can proceed relatively unimpeded.

Do you really believe that Donald will get sent to state prison? As satisfying a prospect that might be, it would be completely unprecedented to imprison a former president and possible president-elect.

I didn't follow the case very closely, but apparently closer than you did. The charges centered on actions he took while president (i.e., recording payments made under an NDA as "Legal Fees"). And at issue is testimony that relates to "official acts" that 1) should never have been allowed in the first place, but 2) are now retroactively inadmissable in court.

LOL, the apeal is coming no matter what the sentence is or when it takes place. The only thing the Judge and Democrats want and can expect is the publicity surrounding the sentence. Now, any publicity value is gone.

Really?

There is a distinction between actions he took while president and actions he took as president. Only the latter are immune. Charging campaign expenses as legal fees and filing false recording documents to the state are not official acts of a president. None of that is inadmissible or subject to immunity.

Do you understand what "official acts" as president are? Can you explain how making false state records would in any way be presidential?

He will appeal because that's what he does (he has a stable of lawyers on retainer), but if he tries to use absolute presidential immunity as the basis, it will be quickly denied and the lawyers may get sanctioned yet again. He will appeal to the 11th district and when that is denied, the Supreme Court. There is no guarantee that the Supreme Court will actually hear the appeal.

Donald and Bragg, the prosecutor, may benefit and even bask in the public eye, but the judge is not out for publicity. He has run a quiet, fair and professional court. The Democrats are reveling in this publicity of his being a convicted felon - the value of which continues unabated.

In what kind of country are the rich and powerful immune to the law?

I wasn't there. I'm just explaining why the judge said sentencing may not be necessary. Dem hopes for a jailed trump are pie in the sky. How any Christian can be a Democrat blows my mind.

When and where - link please - did Merchan say or indicate that sentencing may not be necessary? I think you misunderstood.

“The Court is a fair, impartial, and apolitical institution,” Merchan wrote. “Adjourning decision on the motion and sentencing, if such is required, should dispel any suggestion that the Court will have issued any decision or imposed sentence either to give an advantage to, or to create a disadvantage for, any political party and/or any candidate for any office.”

you think he's going to say, "Yeah I'm delaying but I'm 1000000% totes going to jail trump!!." if that is his decision? You do know what impartial means right? He's not going to give any hint or clue as to his ruling yet.
