  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Judgement, works, faith.

1 Peter 1:14-21 ESV As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, (15) but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, (16) since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." (17) And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, (18) knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, (19) but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. (20) He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you (21) who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

When facing God, do you believe you will be judged based on your actions and deeds, or do you hold a belief in a ticket to heaven that requires no deeds whatsoever?

God judges our hearts (motives). Our deeds should reflect what is on our heart, but sometimes we can hide our motives from others and maybe ourselves for a while. The rich man in the story of "The rich man and Lazarus" could have built hospitals for the poor and needy with his name on them, but hid the fact he was not ceasing the Lazarus opportunity before him every day.

Paul's letter to the Ephesians gives the balance:

“8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; [it is] the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Eph 2:8-10 NKJV)

So we are not saved by our works, but once saved, we are to do the works that God has prepared for us. As for the question of whether we'll be judged according to our actions, if we know Jesus Christ as our Saviour we won't be condemned to hell for our works or lack of them.

Once a person believes in Jesus for God's free gift of Eternal Life (salvation) there is no judgment. To see if they will spend eternity with God on the new earth.

“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
-------
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

For the believer there is the judgment seat of the Messiah, The Bema seat judgment. A judgment of how the born again child of God lived their earthly life good or bad. To establish the gain or loss of rewards.

For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
----------
Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

I think we'll be judged on our deeds, words, and thoughts (and those things we were supposed to do but didn't do).

The parable of the three servants indicates that those who did the Father's will will be rewarded while those who did not will be condemned. What we do or don't do will count.

As for our words, Christ stated that "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken.a man will give account for every useless word" NIV Matthew 12:36-37

In this day and age of social media trolls and radio shock jocks, some people are in for a nasty surprise.

In regard to our thoughts Matthew 5:28 NIV "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." God reads our thoughts and He knows what we think.

It's quite clear we're going to be judged, no matter who we are, Christian or not. But those of us who have accepted Christ will pass from judgment to eternal life.

I believe however in line with Catholic teaching that most of us (with a few saintly exceptions) we spend some time in Purgatory getting our persistent sins sorted out. God might forgive us, but I don't think He's going to let us all waltz into the eternal wedding banquet wearing dirty rags.

Thas's why we Catholics recite the Confiteor (Latin for "I confess") at every mass -

I confess to Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Merely for being lazy, Christians will be tossed into hell. This is in the parable of the talents.

Matthew 25:30 Therefore, cast that unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

It's like the time of Noah's Ark. Get on the Ark or die.

The parable of the talents is about the harvests as applied to Christians. One must avoid the harvests or get tossed into hell.

Entrance to heaven will be based on true faith.

Reward will be based on the quality of one's work.

When I stand before the Throne on the Day of Judgment I anticipate two things: I will be judged by the things I have done (and failed to do), and that ultimately it is only by the grace of God, the mercy He has for me--wretch and sinner that I am--that I shall endure and pass from judgment to life, because of what Christ has done for me, which is mine as a free gift received through faith.

There is no ticket to heaven. But neither shall I pass through Judgment based on my works, my works shall stand and condemn me on that Day. It is only by the goodness, love, kindness, and grace of God in Jesus Christ that I shall stand.

Since judgement is on what one does it is not a matter of faith alone.
Works are the proof of faith.

No works = no faith = no salvation.

Fruitless works = fruitless faith = no reward (1 Co 3:11-15).

Fruitless works = fruitless faith = no reward (1 Co 3:11-15).
Your response resembles an echo of an ancient doctrine lacking intrinsic value.
1 Corinthians 3:11-15 GNB For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid. (12) Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw. (13) And the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone's work; the fire will test it and show its real quality. (14) If what was built on the foundation survives the fire, the builder will receive a reward. (15) But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire.
The text makes no mention of fruit but speaks of a testing fire. This test uses a refining fire to evaluate one's deeds. It is these actions that are scrutinized. If the deeds endure the test, akin to gold and precious stones, a reward will be conferred. However, these deeds are not evidence of faith, nor are they a pathway to salvation. If one's works do not survive and are devoured by the fire, the test is failed, and no reward is forthcoming. The individual performing the deeds is rewarded if they last and suffers loss if they do not. This has nothing to do with final salvation. It is more like the refining fire of purgatory.

Your post expresses such a deep-seated fear of works that it cannot admit that "the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. You didn't answer my question: where does my post disagree?

And "the rest of the story"?

"If it (his work) is burned up, he will suffer loss. . .be saved as one escaping through the flames."

What part of 1 Co 3:11-15 do you not believe?
