  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What specific legislation will you commit to to make child care affordable?

...a question posed to Donald Trump at the Economic Club of New York on Sept 5th.

What specific legislation will you commit to to make child care affordable?

Trump: Well, I would do that and we're sitting down, you know, I was, somebody, we had Marco Rubio and my daughter, Ivanka… But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I'm talking about that because the child care is, child care couldn't, you know, there's something you have to have it in this country, you have to have it... I want to stay with child care… So we'll take care of it. Thank you

....he went on to imply that "tarifs" would take care of child care (??)

“Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s going to take care,”

...so tell us, Donald, how does a tariff on all imported goods help a young family struggling to pay for child care?

And to think, there will be some people who will listen to that gibberish and really believe this man has it all together and would make a great leader.

Really the best way to do it is one income households. I realize that currently that is not always an option. Shift work can also work.

No, no. It's Grandma and Grandpa or Auntie Pauline. I guess they will pass legislation requiring relatives to watch people's kids or something?

This upcoming debate should be ... interesting. The Democrats still don't have a current platform, and both Trump and Harris have a penchant for rambling when speaking off the cuff.
Huh?

This was even posted in the thread you started about this... from a thread 2 weeks prior... by another poster who is a mod claiming it didn't exist.

...and you acknowledged it.

Yes, but that platform preamble states:

President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats are running to finish the job.

Maybe they just haven't done the find and replace on the words "Biden" and "Harris", but this platform very much speaks as though Biden is still running for office. Hence why I said the Democrats still don't have a current platform.

In a way those laws are already passed.

If you can survive on one income, that is great. Not all households can.

Which is why I said that it is not always an option and always mentioned shift work in some cases ( depending on what the spouces do) as a way to help with that.

Seriously? Harris is not the most concise speaker, but she can and does address the actual question.

Do any of you all remember the very early AI interactive website that put together phrases in grammatical order? That’s what cognitively declined Donald does. He strings together his most commonly used phrases without any coherent point.

That childcare answer is classic blathering Donald.

Why is that best? I think paid parental leave in the first part of a child’s life would be better as the child doesn’t need full time non working parents when they’re in school.

Workplace childcare deserves more support - perhaps that could be incentivized like healthcare insurance used to be.

President Biden isn't running to finish the job, is he?

You'd think the Democrats could at least update their platform to accurately state who their candidate is.

Also, why is this document not linked on the Democrats website? It still points to the 2020 platform.

For example my mother did work part-time with hours that did allow her to both be home when we got home and leave after we left. My point was really that it is best if one parent is always around to supervise the child if they wish to work part time for adult interaction and extra money then that is one thing, but leaving the kids unsupervised and/or trusting the kids to go where they are supposed to go with no supervistion to ensure they get where they are supposed to be has oftentimes proven to not work. Of course this is not the case with all kids.

Yep.

Harris is not the most concise speaker,

That might be the understatement of the year.

Have you heard her talk about the significance of the passage of time?

but she can and does address the actual question.

Harris often sounds like she's trying to meet a word count in an oral report.

That's why I said the debate will be interesting. Neither candidate is a particularly good orator, and neither one speaks well off the cuff. It's why Harris has done exactly one interview since being instilled as the Democratic candidate.

I look forward to this same question in the debate...and the answers.

I suspect Trump will attempt to evade answering it either by delecting or claiming that tariffs will somehow address child care needs. Or maybe he will declare the goverment will cover all child care just as he promised for IBF treatments?

(his complete answer...)

“Well, I would do that, and we’re sitting down — you know, I was, uh, somebody, we had Sen. Marco Rubio [(R-Fla.)] and my daughter, Ivanka, was so, uh, impactful on that issue. It’s a very important issue.

But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about, that — because child care is child care. It’s, couldn’t — you know, it’s something, you have to have it. In this country, you have to have it.

But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to but they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us, but they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country.

Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s gonna take care. We’re gonna have — I, I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time. Coupled with, uh, the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country — because I have to say with child care, I want to stay with child care, but those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I’m talking about, including growth.

But growth also headed up by what the plan is that I just, uh, that I just told you about. We’re gonna be taking in trillions of dollars, and as much as child care is talked about as being expensive, it’s, relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers we’ll be taking in.

We’re going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people and then we’ll worry about the rest of the world. Let’s help other people. But we’re gonna take care of our country first. This is about America first. It’s about: Make America great again. We have to do it, because right now we’re a failing nation. So we’ll take care of it. Thank you. Very good question.”

With regards to tariffs, Trump keep insisting it's a tax on foreign nations.
That simply is not true.
The "tax" is passed on to the consumer via a higher price for the imported good.

But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to but they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us, but they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country.
