  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's good to see that Gov. Tim Walz' state, Minnesota, also exempts clothing from sales taxes. Once again showing that he is "for the people."

You'll say anything, regardless of its truthfulness, to prop up Walz, won't you?

The clothing exemption dates back to the heated political battle over the creation of the state's sales tax in the 1960s.
Pretty sure Walz didn't have anything at all to do with Minnesota tax policies in the 1960s since he wasn't even born until 1964.

Did I say that he initiated the sales tax exemption?

He has passed many more bills that benefit the 99%.

He doesn't need propping up. I once heard that priests listening to nuns' confessions feel like they are being "pelted with popcorn."

Being "pelted with popcorn" pretty accurately describes how effective Republicans' attempts to find fault with Tim Walz are.

You certainly implied it. You said that it was good to see Tim Walz's state also had a tax-emption on clothing and then said, "Once again showing that he is for the people". But Walz had absolutely nothing to do with the clothing tax-exemption. So clothing being tax-exempt in Minnesota tells you absolutely nothing about Walz since he had nothing to do with the policy.

Surely you must know that. But then again, propaganda is a heckuva thing...

The federal gov't should eliminate grocery tax across all states. :) Then maybe people might like the government better.
Sales taxes are state, not federal. The Federal government has no ability to regulate state taxation unless it is being done in a discriminatory way.

Yeah, but is is so strange why our country does not unify more laws. I get it, states have rights as well, but unifying some laws would make more sense, so that if one moves from one state to another, there would be less of a jarring experience for newcomers to a different state.

The federal government doesn't have the power to tell states what and how much to tax stuff. That power belongs to the state's legislature. (In the same way, the states can't tell Congress what to tax and how much.)

Yeah, I kinda see the reason why, as different states have different average incomes per person, and it would be unfair to tax folks the California rate in Mississippi.

Can you provide details of this?
I grew up in California. Lived there from ‘68 to ‘90. There was no sales tax on food from the grocery stores. Non-food items were still taxed.

You mean moderate (Reagan) Republican....before Red and Blue states was a thing....

Can you provide details of this?
No, it wasn’t Reagan. It was Republican Frank Merriam in 1935, before Red and Blue states were a thing.

History—Effective, except as above indicated, July 1, 1935.

There are a lot of subsequent amendments, which I am not going to go through.

The general idea of this thread seems to be that it's good to live in a red state, because those still have a food tax that can be eliminated.

How is it in Germany? Be careful, I'll be there in three weeks and I'll check.

Most food stuff has a reduced value adjusted tax of 7 %. If you eat out or buy certain foodstuffs, you pay the normal VAT of 19%. Most germans, myself included, don't really understand the reasoning behind which foodstuffs are at a reduced rate and which aren't. For example, cow milk is at the reduced tax, while soy milk is at the normal tax. For a lobster, you pay the normal tax, for shrimp the reduced tax. For bottled water, you pay the reduced tax cost, while fizzy water is at the normal tax rate. So is fruit juice, while fruit itself is at the reduced rate. I could go on, but in short, it's the attempt of making "basic foodstuffs" cheaper, but done by several committees over several decades.

Also, when you buy groceries, the tax is already included in the prices on display.

(Enjoy your time in germany.)

Ah, then before Oklahoma eliminated the food tax we were already paying less than those in Germany -

I love Germany, I'm there three to four times a year. I'll be in Berlin this time, with a stop in Stuttgart. The Netherlands in December, Greece in January and then back to Germany in February.

Good people, good food! Great Churches.

"Oklahoma ranks 25th in the nation in general sales tax burden per capita at $503."
